My thoughts weren't any clearer when it came to Edward or the Cullens, but that didn't stop the anticipation from curling in my stomach like a secret.

Saturday morning arrived in Forks' signature grayscale. The clouds hung like they always did, but today they looked thinner—more like gauze than wool, letting soft light leak through. Maybe Edward's prediction about good weather wasn't total BS after all.

Apart from his vague promise to answer some questions, it was the simple fact that he was coming to see me that had me on edge. I'd woken up way earlier than usual—unheard of—and to make matters worse, I actually tried.

Jeans, combat boots, a sweater, jacket. Functional, but not completely indifferent. I even stole one of Kimi's scarves—because, you know, vampires. Not that a strip of fabric was going to stop a supernatural predator, but still. Points for effort.

By the time I was done, it was just shy of eight. I lingered in the kitchen, poking at a stale Pop-Tart and checking the clock like I was expecting it to fast-forward if I stared hard enough.

Charlie had already left for the station. But Kimi? Still home. Still getting ready.

Which meant she was going to answer the door when Edward arrived.

Shit.

That had completely slipped my mind.

Kimi stepped into the kitchen in her scrubs, coffee in hand. She slowed at the sight of me and did a subtle double take.

"Wow," she said, arching a brow. "You're up. And dressed. Should I be worried?"

"I have plans," I said as casually as I could, hoping half-truths counted for something.

Kimi's eyes narrowed. "Plans? On dance day?" She took a sip of coffee, then gave me the once-over. "And you're wearing makeup."

I scowled. "Did they outlaw that while I was asleep?"

"No," she said slowly. "You just hate makeup. You've gone on tirades about how it's capitalism's way of tricking women into spending $30 on insecurity."

"Well," I shrugged, "people evolve. Character development. Look it up."

She snorted, but didn't drop it. "Who are you meeting?"

"Jess and Angela," I lied smoothly.

Kimi's face lit up. "Seriously? That's awesome. I'm so glad you're connecting with girls who aren't, you know..." She gestured vaguely. "Into weird stuff."
