"Do you have bug spray? Your books? Your toothbrush? Your hairbrush? We can still go back home if you forgot anything. There's still time before you have to board the plane. OH! Did you pack your socks? Underwear? Did you pack–"
"Mom! For the millionth time, I have everything!"
Margaret sighed and shook her head anxiously, "I know, I know... You can't blame me for worrying. I mean it's not everyday you move away to another state"
However, with a pointed knowing smirk, Barbie silently reminded her mother that with her track record of late it does, in fact, happen often... Mrs. Roberts rolled her eyes and went along with the teasing.
"Point taken"
Moving day...
It had finally arrived...
Summer semester came and went... Fall semester came and went... Christmas and New Years had come and gone, and now it was finally time for the moment for Ken, Barbie, and Skipper to trek along on their new adventure to the tropical island of paradise as they either further their education and pursue new dreams in a new location.
Hawai'i
The past several months has been a chaotic whirlwind of paperwork, phone calls, emails, and checklists. Ken's graduation ceremony from New York University went off without a hitch, thankfully, followed by a large celebration back home after the pomp and circumstance concluded on the East Coast. Mr. and Mrs. Carson put on the largest spread possible, filled with more food than you could ever imagine. While the parental units were busy reminiscing back on their baby boy and how much he had grown over the years, lamenting on how he's now "a man", Ken was just absolutely thrilled and relieved to be done with college...
For the next three weeks.
Skipper thankfully was the one to actually find a place for them to live first... Mostly because she was the most anxious to get out and the most impatient for Ken to make a decision. She searched and searched and claimed to snag an amazingly affordable apartment on the coast of Waikiki on the island of Oahu for the incredibly low price of $400 a month. It was within walking distance to both the coast (a plus for Skipper) and the university (a plus for Ken and Barbie) and came with its own parking spots and laundry unit! While the blonde duo was skeptical at first at the nearly 'too good to be true' cost and amenities, the more the younger girl hyped it up, the more excited they grew. So, month after month, they purged and packed, planned and prepared, and before they knew it was time.
Moving day...
"But you just got home! Why do you have to leave so soon? Okay, technically, you didn't just get home, but still!"
Barbie chuckled sympathetically at her youngest sister. Chelsea wasn't too thrilled they had to leave again, but acted like she understood.
"I know, Chelsea... But it's just how it has to be"
Stacie beside her sighed and put a supportive, big sister hand on her shoulder.
"They have to start college again, Chels. Aaaaaaand", she directed her gaze towards her older sister, "as unfair as this is, I'm okay with it"
"Unfair? What's unfair?", Skipper asked over her shoulder as she lugged the last of her bags out of the camper. The now high school junior Stacie chuckled and thumbed over towards her oldest sister.
"Barbie went to New York for her senior year. I mean, I really could make my case to come with you guys when it's time for my senior year in Hawai'i, but", she glanced down at her younger sister's head with a heavy, loving sigh and a smile, "I'm staying here in California. Someone here would miss me too much", she added with an affectionate shove to Chelsea's shoulder, causing a laugh to rise in the little girl's throat.
