"How big do you think the waves are gonna be tomorrow? I heard Northern Hawai'i gets nuts in November!"
Ken laughed and shrugged, flinging the frisbee back at the younger Roberts sister.
"Well, normally they can average about 16 feet, but in the winter? They could get up to 30 or 40, sometimes even 50 feet"
Stacie gasped in shock, stupefied at the number. She tossed the frisbee back as her mouth dropped, "Whooooaaa... No way! Dude! You are soooo gonna crash and burn!"
Scoffing indignantly at the insult, Ken straightened up with a bewildered protest.
"Hey!"
The younger girl snickered and shrugged, "Just kidding! But seriously, those are some serious wave heights! That would be sweet if you could catch one"
"Well, that's why they hold most surfing competitions around this time", Ken pointed out, jumping and catching her return throw, "Big waves, big crowds, big stunts! In fact, I heard there was one wave that topped 100 feet a few years ago. Some of the local surfers were talking about it the other day. Righteous, right?", trick throwing the frisbee over his shoulder to her.
"Totally!"
The Sunset Beach Classic surfing competition was a big deal. Only a few select elite athletes were privileged enough to attend and compete, showing off their skills and talents with a sort of interviewing qualifying process.
And Ken did as such.
Over the last few months, he was excited to get back on his longboard, something he hadn't done for quite a while. After his bout of depressive episodes in the late summer and early Fall, Barbie had encouraged him to make time each week to get out there and surf, often joining him, as well.
It paid off.
He saved enough money and paid an entry fee for an 'interview' day full of surfing to strut his stuff back in early November. Gratefully, he was one of the few twenty contestants that qualified to make it into the final surfing showdowns, tomorrow being day one of three at the Sunset Beach Classic. If this was successful, he would continue on to next week's events, and then the week after, as well.
"You know what, though", Stacie mused, tossing the disc back under her legs, "Without getting too cheesy, ya know... I'm just really happy we're all together. I mean, don't get me wrong, I can't wait to explore this island! The hiking! The ziplines! The snorkeling and surfing and boating and all that jazz! But...", she sighed, a soft expression crossing her face, "I'm just glad we're all here for Thanksgiving. I kinda missed you guys, ya know?"
Ken smiled back at her, nodding in agreement at the familial sentiment.
"Yeah, I know what you mean... We missed you all, too, Stace, believe me. Hawai'i is awesome and all, don't get me wrong, but I do miss home", the blonde man admitted, gripping at the frisbee in his hands. He shrugged and chuckled, "You know, Barbie and I have been talking here and there about it, like what our plans are for after all this is done... College, that is. We may stay out here in Hawai'i. We may come back to California. We may move to Alaska!", but then after a second thought he laughed and waved it off, "Buuuut that place gets too cold. Maybe that'll just be a nice place to visit"
Stacie shivered as if she could feel the icy Arctic air, "Brrrr! Geez, just thinking about it makes me cold. Vacations are one thing, but my home better be 80 degrees and sunny every day!"
"You got that right", Ken agreed, spinning and backhanding the frisbee over the grass. He straightened up and quickly glanced around, cautiously scanning as if paranoia struck, "But", he whispered loudly over to her, "You will keep what I showed you a secret, right?"
