CHAPTER FIVE

PURPLE

"Okay, what are we doing here? This looks like a residential street."

"No, really, Syd? This is a residential street? Where people live and reside? I hadn't noticed." Irwin had been driving for the past five hours, and he was starting to get a little snippy about it. It didn't help that we'd been driving for six days with four people stuffed into the truck. "Trust me, this is where we need to be. I can feel it."

"Yeah, I can too." I agreed, "There's another X-er here somewhere."

"So, what, are we just gonna go door to door, knocking around  like the Jehovah's Witness of Project X until we find them?"

"Yeah, Kai, if we have to." Irwin snapped back,

"Yeah, why do you always have to be so cynical about everything?" Syd added.

"I am not cynical about everything!" She yelled back, offended. Then paused and looked questioningly at Irwin and me, "Am I?"

"Kai, this is not the time to discuss your excessive cynicism." I told her "We're trying to find- oh my god, her." I pointed out the window to a girl walking on the sidewalk. She was carrying what looked like a school bag, and wearing a crop top and shorts despite the chill of the morning.

    "Her?" Irwin slammed the brakes,

"What the hell are you doing?! Keep driving!" Syd yelled frantically, Irwin slammed the gas and right as the vehicle had slowed to a stop, it lurched forward and we sped past the girl. It was impossible to not notice the strange look she gave us as we passed.

"Oh, shit. Shit, she saw us. Keep driving, keep driving." We rolled past and turned the very next corner, then turned again before pulling over, just to be sure she wouldn't walk by us again.

"Ohhh my god, that was so fucking awkward, why the hell did you do that?!"

"She's an X-er, we were gonna talk to her." I told him.

"You can't just stop your half-broken Creepmobile in the middle of the street, and start talking to random people on their way to school, and expect them not to be incredibly freaked out. Especially if we made a mistake, and she's not who we're looking for. Jeez, it's like you've never spoken to another human being in your lives."

    "We've talked to people!"

"Really?" Sydney asked, "You've spoken to real people your own age about normal things?"

    "Yes!"

    "Not including each other."

    "Oh... Well, no."

"Exactly. Take it from someone who hasn't been in a moving house their whole life, that's not the way to go about breaking the ice."

"I thought you said you didn't have friends before, though?"

"I still had to talk to people!" He insisted defensively.

"Okay then, what do we do?"

"Well, first, we're going to have to prove that she's who we're looking for. We're going to need to get her to show us her powers."

"And how are we going to do that?" He smirked.

"Don't you worry about that. I have a plan. But we're going to have to do a little waiting." Irwin groaned,
