«So have you talked to Ominis?» Poppy asked while they traced down the streets of Edinburgh.
Y/n looked at her with slight frustration. «Why do you ask that?»
«He invited us all to his promotion party next weekend and I figured-...»
«-Well you figured wrong!» y/n noticed the sharpness of her tone and regretted it immediately. Her heart oddly enough flustered a bit at the mentioning of her old friend, but she quickly disregarded it. «Poppy, I am sorry. I don't know why I lashed out like that»
«It's okay... I just never really understood why the two of you lost contact. You were so close after...» Poppy stopped herself. «We're here»
The two women had traveled down a small alley that led them to a ridiculously narrow and tall house that was trapped between the surrounding buildings. The narrow house was made from black bricks and had a crooked green door. Above the door was a sign in the shape of a giant toad. Yellow letters had faded from the title.
«Poppy, where are we? You said we were going to- «
«If I had told you the truth, you would not have come» Poppy said calmly.
Y/n turned her eyes angrily toward her friend. She felt even more on edge considering the news she read this morning, not knowing whether they were real. Poppy reached out her hand and touched y/n's arm gently. «Please, trust me» she added and y/n waited before she gave her a halfhearted nod.
The women both entered the tilting green door. The room that met them was obviously conjured from magic. The narrow exterior of the building was nothing like the big room that met them. In front of them was a long oaken bar with four massive barrels behind it. Candles with melting wax were stacked in mountains on the bar itself and the rest of the interior. One long table and six smaller round ones filled the floor in front of the bar. Stairs were reaching up from each side of the bar to a second floor. Y/N looked up, one - two- three - four - five floors raised above them. Some with witches and wizards sitting by the rail, some covered in drapes so it was impossible to see in.
The bartender, a man in his mid twenties with short black hair and a thick scar over his right chin, looked over to them. He looked very familiar. He nodded at Poppy with a wink and turned around to pour two tankards of ale. He turned back around, placed the mugs on the bar, then pulled out his wand and gestured to the opposite side of the room. The tankards flew controlled over and thudded down on an empty table where the two women sat down.
«Why did you bring me here, Poppy?»
«Just wait a bit longer and you'll see...» Poppy replied mischievously. This was incredibly non-hufflepuff of her.
The bartender came over to the table where the women were sitting. He leaned over to Poppy's ear and whispered something, Poppy responded with a nod. «Come, y/n!» Poppy got up from her seat and followed the bartender up one of the stairs. Y/n sighed, but followed slightly unwillingly, she hated not knowing what was going on. The room upstairs was just a big space with a few seats and tables. At the very end there were three large tapestries, the bartender went over to the one on the far left and uttered some inaudible words. The tapestry opened and revealed another hidden room inside. How big was this place?
The two women walked inside and before they could react the door closed behind them. The room was pitch dark. A sudden burst of light lit up the room, making y/n cover her eyes with her hand.
«SURPRISE!» was chanted in a choir of voices from the newly lit room.
In front of her was a room filled with her old friends from school. Natty, Gareth, Imelda, just to name a few. Even Sirona and Professor Garlick.
«You don't think we would let you get away with your birthday, yet again did you?» Natty called out from the crowd.
Y/n sighed. She hated her birthday. She had no memories from her childhood and thus she kept that day hidden and normally traveled away during that time. Somehow Poppy must have found out the exact date and arranged this monstrosity to surprise her. She felt humiliated, yet relieved and a bit ashamed that she for a moment thought her friend was going to go behind her back about something entirely different.
Alas. It was nice seeing them all again. Y/n had been traveling for a few years now and was just recently back in Scotland. She never revealed what she was traveling for to anyone, but she was looking for ways to break some sort of really powerful magic. Some type of magic that had kept her imprisoned for the last 10 years.
«It is good to see you, my friend. How was your travels?» Natty came over, hugged y/n tightly, while y/n gently reciprocated. It was as if Natty had read her mind, thinking about the travels.
«It was... Not as fulfilling as I had hoped» Y/n replied. Feeling a strong urge to not enter that subject.
Natty got the memo and grabbed her arm gently leading her into the crowd to meet the others. Y/n hugged and chatted with everyone, but her mind kept traveling back to the newspaper and Sebastian. A wave of guilt rushed over her. He deserved to be here as much as she did. The wave of guilt formed into a rock in her guts when she spotted the brunette sitting by one of the tables behind the crowd. She had full fringes and her hair was loose at shoulder length. Anne sent her a careful smile and gently lifted her hand in a half greeting. Y/n excused herself from the crowd and they scattered out to different seats in the room. Y/n approached the brunette, eyes not leaving hers, but it stung, because they were so much like his.
«Anne. What are you doing here?» Y/n asked firmly
After y/n had consumed the content in the repository, to save Anne, for Sebastian's sake. She and Ominis still turned him in for his mistakes. Y/n could not help but feel a certain blame towards her. She looked well though. Really well in fact and for that y/n was grateful. But just like with Ominis, she had not spoken to Anne since school ended. Although she did check on her in secret every now and then, as much for her own pride and confirmation that her magic worked as she actually cared for the woman.
«I owe you my life, y/n and I will never stop believing in our friendship» Anne stated firmly, not taking her eyes off of y/n.
Something in y/n sunk. The rock was lighter in a sense. Was this all there was? She looked at Anne for a bit in silence, her eyes... his eyes. She remembered the same eyes from the photo in the newspaper. Only Anne's were filled with remorse and compassion. Y/n sat down across from the brunette and gently grabbed her hand.
«I have been angry, and resentful for so many years, Anne. Old habits really do die hard. But I am ready to try and move past this. Seb... Sebastian would not have wanted me to waste my life in anger.» She felt a harrowing feeling of uncertainty. Like she could not even trust her own words.
Anne looked startled by the mentioning of her brother's name. Her eyes swelled up with tears. She quickly wiped them away before they could caress down her cheeks. She gave y/n a grateful smile.
Y/n excused herself to the bathroom, but made sure to give Anne a reassuring squeeze of her hand before she got up. As she got up she noticed that the ale she had consumed since she arrived started getting to her head a bit and she slightly stumbled towards the lavatory.
The lavatory did not correspond in style to the rest of the pub. It was neatly decorated in black marble tile stones. Four golden framed mirrors were placed over an equal set of sinks with golden taps. There was a chaise longue in the corner, under a gothic set of windows that seemed to have an enchanted view of an underwater scene. It kind of reminded her of the old Slytherin common room from her school days. Y/n went over to one of the sinks and filled her palms with cold water before gently leaning her face into it. She went for a second splash then she could hear the bathroom door close behind her. Y/n quickly grabbed a towel from the pile next to the sink, but before she could put it to her face she heard a familiar voice behind her.
«Y/n?» The voice was a lot deeper than the last time she heard it. Slightly raspy. But she immediately recognized it. Ominis.
