Chapter 2: This is Home
The Narrator
-Hey. Are we still on for our anniversary dinner tonight?
Jayme texts his girlfriend, Margret, while laying on his back at the foot of his bed.
-Yeah, sure.
She replies. Jayme stares at the two word message, thinking deeply about his next words, before responding;
-Hey, I know this is a weird time to tell you this, but we've been dating for a year now, and I thought you should know.
To which she replied;
-?
Jayme sits up against his pillow, taking a deep breath, his heart pounding in his ears, and responds.
-I'm trans.
-What?
-As in like transgender. I was born a girl, but I'm a boy now. I just thought I should tell you, and I hope this doesn't affect our relationship.
-Are you serious right now? "You hope this doesn't affect our relationship"??
-I know, I should've told you sooner, I'm sorry.
-Being sorry doesn't make it better, Jayme. If that's your real name.
-Of course it's my real name.
-Is it the name you were born with?
-Well, no.-Then it's not your real name.
I can't do this.
-Margret?
Jayme sends the last text, but is immediately met with error: this user has blocked you.
Jayme continues to stare at his phone, at her name at the top of his screen, in disbelief.
It took a minute or two for the reality of what just happened to finally set in for him, and when it did, he silently slumped over onto his side, quietly sobbing into his bedsheets.
Any kind of future he had with Margret... gone, just like that.
Jayme, after staying in his slumped over position for what felt to him like forever, sits up onto the edge of his bed, cross legged, pulling his black guitar with a couple stickers on its body off of its nearby stand and adjusting his rounded glasses.
"Often, I am upset. That I cannot fall in love, but I guess... this avoids the stress of falling out of it," Jayme sings while strumming the guitar, his voice cracking slightly.
"Are you tired of me, yet? I'm a little sick right now, but I swear... when I'm ready I will fly us out of here," he continues, strumming along with the song.
Jayme continues playing the song, drifting gracefully between the chords as he sings.
"Time is... slowly... tracing his face, but strangely he feels at home in this place," Jayme finishes, a few tears rolling down his face to join the dried ones there already.
He sat in silence once again, guitar in his lap, before a knock came at the door.
"Yeah?" He called, quickly drying his face and adjusting his glasses once again.
"Hey, it's me," Cassidy warmly greets, stepping into the room with a mug in one hand.
"I brought you some tea, if you want it," she offers, handing it to Jayme.
