Chapter 21: Clear My Head

Cassidy Locke

Well, I guess this is happening, huh? Ave and I... we're gonna be gone in a few minutes. Then I'm gonna be gone. Gone, without having had a proper goodbye to anyone in this room, other than Avery.

Maybe we're making a mistake.

James is seated where he was before, in one of the four seats at the kitchen table. Alex and Jayme are sitting beside each other on the floor, almost exactly like me and Ave were not very long ago. I'm leaning against the doorframe that leads into the waiting room, with Avery beside me, leaning on the front of her desk.

"S-So what happens now?" Jayme's voice shakes.

"I was, uhm... I was going to go for a walk. Clear my head," Avery says, turning to me and giving me a look.

This is it, I guess.

"Wanna come with, Cass?"

"Yeah. S-Sure."

She pushes herself off the desk, stepping past me and towards the door, and I closely follow. We both stop at the front door, while she has her hand on the doorknob and I'm still right behind her.

I turn to face James, Jayme and Alex, who are all looking at us with teary eyes.

"Cya, guys," I say, looking back at them all with tears also in my eyes. Those eyes eventually land on Alex's, and they are full of tears, too. I don't know how they would know, but their gaze and the slight nod they gave me said that they knew this would probably be the last time our eyes would ever meet.

I want to tell them, I want to tell them all just how much they all mean to me, how grateful I am...

And how sorry I am. But I know I can't.

With the dam that is holding back my tears seconds from bursting, I turn to face Avery, as she opens the door and we step out of the building together.

She's all the family I have or need now.
