It was early evening and Bobby was preparing dinner for Athena, knowing she'd be having a hard day at work. His wife, being a police sergeant, regularly had to deal with tough calls, and he liked to prepare dinner to welcome her home each night.

As he chopped the veg, his phone rang. He hesitated when he saw the name 'Winding Path Residence' across his screen, then pressed answer.

"Hello?"

"Hi" came the voice on the other end, sounding tired.

"Tamara, is that you?" Bobby asked, glad that  she would be calling him, but worried why. "Are you high?"

"Please don't be mad at me". Her voice trembled. "I feel like everyone is always mad at me.

"I'm not mad at you." Bobby replied, knowing how much this girl was hurting, and wishing he knew how to ease her pain.

"You seem really nice. Wendell was really nice too. Maybe that's why you guys were friends. I don't have any friends. Wendell tried... but he's dead now".

Bobby slowly drew a breath.
"Maybe I can be your friend"

"Carrie and Trey won't like it. They say I'm only safe under their supervision"

"Well I don't think that's true. Why don't I come and get you?"

"You'd do that?" Her voice could sense a trace of hope.

"Yeh!"

"That's really nice, you seem really nice. But I think it's too late for that."

"No. No!" Bobby retorted, hoping it isn't.

"I just wanted to say, I'm really sorry about Wendell, I wish I could say that to him." She hesitated, her breath shaking. "Maybe I can soon".

"Tamara?" Bobby asked, panic rising in his stomach

"Im so tired" she breathed, and Bobby heard a thud as something hit the floor.

Bobby's heart raced as he thought back to the last thing Wendell said to him, his voice echoing in his ear "I'm tired now, so tired".

Bobby grabbed his keys and ran out to his truck, ringing Athena on the way.
