"  Thought I'd been in love before, but in my heart, I wanted more "

july 4th, 1956:

nat and paul were the greatest of friends, even if they met in middle school in the 6th grade. they would do everything together, they were like siblings. paul would call nat's mum " aunt katy, " yeah they were that close. but, nat still hasn't forgot her childhood best friend, jane.

there was a party happening that night and paul decided to bring nat as his plus one. nat did find it flattering but there was something about nat that paul didn't know about; she had a long-time crush on him every since the day they met. she swore to never tell him until they were a bit older and more mature.

" nat! come with me! we'll have a blast! " paul spoke, he took her hand, she chuckled.

"  alright fine. " she agreed. " i'll just call jane to say i'll be out. " nat head for the phone and dialed jane's number. after calling her, the two teenagers got ready and head for the party.

" are you ready to have some fun, natty? " paul asked her.

" hell yeah, paulie. " nat gripped her hand in a fist, a smirk appeared. paul smiled.

" shall we leave now? " paul scanned the party, there was barley anyone there so what was the point.

" why not? " nat asked him, raising her eyebrows. they both exited the car and head to the party, walking in unison.

only if nat know that this would be the day her friendship will paul would fall into a million pieces.

-------------------------------------------------

nat had a smile across her face. she had deeply loved paul since the first time they laid eyes on each other. she wouldn't have never known that today would be the day.

" really? you-you love me? " paul chocked, nat nodded.

" i always have, paul. " nat said, staring tenderly into his hazel eyes. jane stood there, she supposedly just left the two. she was happy for nat, though she was jealous. she was jealous ever since.

" since when? "

nat took a deep breath and settled on the couch. she patted the seat next to her to indicate paul to see next to her.

" remember back in middle school? back in the 6th grade? " nat questioned, he nodded.

" when i first saw you and had a conversation, like a full-on conversation, with you,  " she toke a breath. " i'd liked you, a lot. more than friends, more than anything. but we were so close like siblings, i thought it would ruin it all. " nat said, she felt like crying. she held back the tears and waited for paul's respond.

" nat, " he took her hand, staring tenderly into her eyes. " i liked you too, since childhood. but yes, i couldn't admit my crush for you because i felt like you didn't like me like that, y'know? i always thought you liked me as a friend. but hearing you say that changed my perspective of seeing you, nat. " he smiled. but all of a sudden, the smile faded and he started to talk again. " after the party accident, i realized something. i realized that i loved you and i was being such a jerk to you. "

paul's speech was so heart-warming to her, she had no words. nat wanted to kiss him, but she didn't know if she could. but nat did anyway and she had no regret in doing it. the kiss was around 1 minute, until their lips disconnected.

" your speech was beautiful, paul. " nat smiled, he cupped her face.

" y'know what's also beautiful? " paul asked her, she squinted her eyes in confusion. it toke nat a couple seconds to understand what he meant and she felt flattered.

" no what? "

" you. " he gave her a quick peck and walked to the door, nat bit her lip.

" i'll see you tomorrow, darling. " he winked at her and walked out the door, nat was totally mesmerized by him. they were friends, then they weren't, then friends again, and now lovers. life was doing well for nat now.

jane peeked out of her room, scanning the room if it was clear. " is it clear? " she asked, nat turned around and nodded.

" y'all are cute together, nat. when will you tell your parents about your new relationship? " jane asked her, nat's eyes widened in realization. fuck, i forgot tell to my mum i meet paul again. ugh, i'm so stupid.

" oh christ! i forgot to tell my mum about it! " nat ran to the phone and dialed the number quickly, jane's eyes widened in shocked and walked towards her.

" calm down, nat. " jane patted nat's shoulder in comfort. nat gripped on the phone hard, she had to call her mum to let her know how life was going. the phone rang until a voice spoke, it only took around 3 minutes.

" nat? is this you? "

nat knew the voice, it was her mum's but it was off. is mum sick or something?

" hi mum, how are you? "

" uh, fine. a bit sick here and there and everywhere, y'know? " her mum coughed, nat couldn't hear most of it luckily. " also, aunt mary asked about you. "

" paul's mum? "

" yeah, she asked if you meet paul. she said he was in your area. " nat held back her breath. she had to tell her own mum about what happened between them today and yesterday. jane stared at nat, she didn't hear the conversation but she knew what it was about.

" about that, uh, i met paul. yesterday actually. "

" ah! well that's fun! " her mum laughed, coughing afterwards. " i thought you wouldn't forgive him after the accident. "

" please don't talk about the accident, mum. and me and paul became friends again, and.. and... " nat chocked back again. she was gonna say but then held it back in.

" and what? " her mum had a questioning voice. " nat, did he r- "

" no!!! no he didn't!! paul wouldn't do that, mum. " nat yelled at her, jane's eyes widened in shocked.

" he.. uhm... he kissed me and i kissed him back. multiple times actually. "

her mum didn't reply, it was just silence between them all.

" mum, did you die? " nat asked.

her mum finally replied. " no, i'm just shocked. you too were like siblings but hearing you too kissed is really surprising, innit? "

" don't remind me. "

" remind what? "

" about me and paul being like siblings. it makes it weird. " nat felt weird, her stomach curled. " besides, me and jane are like siblings, y'know? "

her mum laughed then coughed once more. " oh nat, you never failed to make me laugh. good night. "

" mum, it's the afternoon. " the phone disconnected and nat put it down, rolling her eyes.

" how was it? " jane asked nat, she was a little flattered hearing what nat said about them, but still, she had to focus.

" it was alright, sure it was scary but it's nice to get off my chest. "

jane smiled, nat smiled back.

" nice to hear. "
