Two voices. Two grownups.
Practically rolling off the couch, you scrambled to your feet. The first—and best—thing to do was to warn Diluc. Surely he was capable of defending Dawn Winery.
You approached the red-haired man, still slumped on the couch, and shook him. And shook him. And shook him. You even pinched his cheeks for good measure.
He didn't wake up.
"Mister Strawberry?" you said, worry beginning to settle in. "Mister Strawberry! Wakey wakey, it's time for school!"
No response, except for a slight twitch of his hand.
"Are you... are you okay?" you asked. Leaning closer, you caught a faint whiff of something bitter on his breath.
Voices from outside. You lunged to the wall, pressing your ear against it—
"You're sure he won't wake up?" asked one grownup voice.
"No. The sedative Lyudmila put in his grape juice at the Angel's Share should knock him out for the entire night."
"Heh. That red-haired fool's losing his touch. Drinking from an unattended glass? What was he thinking?"
Poison! Mister Strawberry got poisoned?
There was a heavy knock on the front door. "Open up!" a gruff voice boomed.
Burying yourself under a cushion, you heard footsteps on the stairs. Three wide-eyed maids appeared, their dresses rumpled as if they'd been hastily thrown on.
"Guests at this hour?" whined one maid. "I was, like, totally asleep!"
"It's, like, two in the morning!" the other agreed with a huff.
"Quiet, Moco, Hillie." Adelinde flicked a strand of blonde hair out of her face and put on a serene smile. "We must receive the guests with respect." Something glinted in her hand—a butter knife.
You burrowed deeper into the pile of cushions.
While Moco and Hillie positioned themselves on either side of the front door, plastering perfect smiles on their faces, Adelinde opened the door. "Hello, dear guests. What can I do for you?" she asked, slipping the knife in the folds of her white dress.
The two grownups—a tall one with big muscles, and a short one with a big beard—glanced at each other. Clearly, they had anticipated a fight, not a cordial welcome.
I'll call 'em Scruffy and Buffy! Buffy for the tall one, and Scruffy for the beard one!
"We, uh... we're here to see Master Diluc," said Scruffy, in a nasal voice. He sounded like he had a bad cold.
"Oh, of course!" Adelinde beamed. "Girls, get the weary travelers some water and moist towels. Come in, please. Master Diluc is currently resting, but he'll receive you in the morning."
Exchanging triumphant looks, the two grownups stepped inside, tracking mud onto the plush carpet. You saw Adelinde purse her lips in disapproval. With undisguised greed, the grownups scanned the room, their lips curling in smirks when they saw Diluc asleep on the couch.
"Now, you must have a seat." The maids steered the grownups to the dining table and tied white handkerchiefs around their necks. You noticed that they were secretly tying the handkerchiefs to the chairs, preventing their victims from getting up.
"H-hey, this handkerchief... it's a little tight," complained Buffy.
Moco blinked innocently at him. "Oh... but sir, you mustn't stain your clothes!" Before he could protest, she said, "I'll get you some cushions, sir, right away. That'll make you more comfy in no time!"
