Sucrose and Albedo found you kneeling motionless in the grass, clutching the broken pocket watch. Exchanging a worried look, they knelt beside you.
Gently, Sucrose pried the shattered watch out of your hands with her own gloved hands. "The glass might cut your hands," she fretted. "Rule number one of lab safety: always wear gloves."
"In the meantime, I have something for you. I believe you were looking for a flower in these woods? This might not be the one you wanted, but..." Albedo drew out a brilliant blue morning glory attached to a gold brooch. Although the brooch was worn and dented in places, the flower remained as beautiful as if it had bloomed just minutes ago. "I have an artifact here that I've been saving for someone brave. So, what do you say? Will you keep it safe for me?"
You looked into his jewel-like eyes, astonished and ashamed by his kindness. "(Y/N) isn't that brave. (Y/N) gets scared lots."
But the two researchers looked at you with warmth in their eyes. "The data says otherwise," Albedo stated matter-of-factly. "Lack of fear does not equal bravery. Otherwise, even a Ruin Guard could be considered brave, in theory. Bravery is about pushing forward despite your fears."
"I-I've never met a child who climbed up to Dragonspine!" Sucrose chimed. "Granted, I don't go out m-much, but... you're quite extraordinary."
"I'm sure my younger sister would be thrilled to meet you," Albedo added. "And I would appreciate it if someone could keep this artifact safe for me. So what do you say?"
Hesitantly, you took the flower from his hand. There was a long pause as you gathered up your courage, fidgeting with the flower. Sucrose smiled encouragingly, and Albedo looked as though he had full confidence in you.
These grownups are so nice! Maybe... just maybe... I can trust them.
You forced yourself to speak: "There's something (Y/N) needs to tell you."
You had meant to play it safe, but the whole story spilled out somehow: from your first meeting with Lumine, to arriving in Mondstadt, to visiting the temple, to getting caught up in the Fatui, to finding Ms. Whopperflower dead. The only things you left out were the System and your ability to turn into a mushroom. Those were the cards up your sleeve; you needed to keep them secret in case all went wrong.
While you spoke, Sucrose bit her nails and occasionally gasped. Albedo's expression could be mistaken for his usual cool contemplation, except for a crease in his brow as he wiped the tears that welled up in your eyes.
When your words died into sniffles, Albedo and Sucrose were quiet. Sucrose looked pale.
"This is... a lot to take in," Albedo finally said. "I'm truly sorry, (Y/N). I understand that your past experiences may have made you wary of putting your faith in others. I'm... grateful that you're willing to share your experiences with us."
