But instead of plunging down like a stone, Lumine stayed aloft. A feathered black glider on her back spread to catch the wind, slowing her fall to a gradual descent.

Whew! I was afraid Big Sis would go through another magic portal in the ground.

Your relief was soon replaced by panic, however, when you realized you had no way to catch up to Lumine. Unlike Paimon, you couldn't fly, and you didn't have a glider, either.

Unless... I turn back into my mushroom form?

You looked around. The few other people in the plaza weren't paying any attention to you.

Closing your eyes, you pictured your bouncy mushroom self. I wanna be a mushroom again! Make me a mushroom, magic nectar!

An icy, tingling sensation filled your stomach. When you opened your eyes again, your body felt light as a bubble.

Yayyy, I get to fly around again! Thanks, Ms. Whopperflower!

You floated down in the direction that you'd seen Lumine glide. Thankfully, the streets were practically deserted, so no one spotted you.

As you were floating past a grand building with a pointed green roof and several windows, you overheard a conversation from an open window. Quickly, you landed on the roof to listen in.

"—retrieve the Holy Lyre?" a voice was saying.

"Soon," replied another voice. "The plans still require a few final touches."

"You know how crucial the Lyre is to—"

"Shh! Impatient fool! That window is open. You never know who might be spying on you, even in this city of blind idiots."

Loud footsteps rushed to the window, and someone poked their head out. Thankfully, they didn't look up at the roof where you were hiding.

With a click, the window locked, and the footsteps retreated.

Aw! I wanna know what the Holy Liar is!

You moved along the roof until you could see Lumine, Paimon, and Amber down in a courtyard with a fountain. You were about to float down and rejoin them when the wind started up again.

As a sea of roiling, gray-green clouds swirled over the city, townspeople screamed and ran for cover. You clung onto the edge of the roof with your tentacles for as long as you can, but a stray gust of wind knocked you into the air.

My strength is too low!

Tumbling wildly through the air, you saw a winged shape soar through the sky. The dragon! Desperately, you fought the wind, straining to fly downwards, but it blew you higher and farther away from your friends every second.

SMACK!

You crashed into a roof and knocked a tile loose.

CRASH!

You knocked a flowerpot off a balcony.

Oww! Owwwwww! That hurt!

Thankfully, your squishy mushroom cap managed to deflect most of the impact.

"I've got you!" a faint voice called.

Filled with relief, you looked down. The wind had blown you over to the stone ramparts that surrounded the city, and a guard standing on a tower was holding out a long stick towards you.

Fighting the wind with all your (limited) might, you slowly, slowly made it down to the wall. You grabbed the stick with your tentacles, and that was when you realized it wasn't a stick.

It was a sword.

"I've got you now, you little pest!" the guard snarled.

"Don't hurt me!" you tried to say, but all that came out of your mouth was a burbling noise.

That's right—I'm a mushroom! I can't talk!

As you thought this, the guard whacked his sword against the ground, with you still holding onto it.

CLANG.

If you hadn't been so squishy, the impact probably would have killed you. You bounced off the ground and landed a few feet away from the guard. Dazed, you stared up at the wild-eyed man now pointing his sword at you.

Mister Mean Grownup... please don't hurt me.

I haven't done anything to you. I won't even cry if you yell at me. I just wanna get back to Big Sis...

But the guard couldn't hear your thoughts, and he probably wouldn't change his mind even if he did.

"This is where it ends, little mushroom. You monsters are always attacking the city. Causing trouble. It's your fault I gotta keep this damn job!"

Gasp! Mister Mean Grownup said the no-no word!

A cruel smile split the guard's face, and he raised his sword. It gleamed dully in the wind-torn darkness. "But not anymore. Once I kill you... I'll take your body back to the Knights. I'll tell 'em there were ten... no, twenty Fungi. It was a hard battle, but the useless monsters were no match for me, a knight. And then... I'll finally get that promotion."

Mister Mean Grownup is crazy! I gotta get out of here!

But when you tried to fly away, you discovered that your body weighed like rocks, and hurt more than it had ever hurt from your parents' wrath.

Ah... my health is low again.

I'm... really tired... *sob*

Maybe I should just go to sleep. And when I wake up...

There won't be any more grownups in the world.

With a cry of triumph, the guard swung his sword...

...and sliced through an apple.

You stared at the neat apple halves falling to the ground. Somehow, you weren't cut up into a Mushroom Skewer. Someone had... thrown the apple? But who?

"You have more important things to worry about than Fungi right now!" said a cheerful voice. "Like me, for example. Although I don't like telling people what to do... you should probably be worried about me right now."

A boy dressed in green descended from the sky, his cape fluttering gently despite the vicious wind. He smiled at both of you—the guard, and the little mushroom. Through a haze of pain, you recognized him.

It's the forest boy! The one with the dragon!

"Hello there, loyal Mondstadter!" he said to the guard, seemingly unfazed by the sword being pointed in his face. "I see you've sliced my apple for me."

Shocked into silence, the guard let the boy pass by him without even making a move.

"As much as I know you want to torment this little Hydro Fungus here... I am quite curious as to how a creature from Sumeru ended up here. I hope you don't mind if I borrow it for a moment!" With that, the boy scooped you up in his arms as if you were a plush toy.

Blinking in disbelief, his dreams of getting a promotion shattering, the guard bellowed, "Hold on! Who d'you think you—"

A blast of fresh, green wind knocked him off the rampart and into the forest outside the city.

Without bothering to check if the guard was alright, the green-clad boy hugged you to his chest. "Hold on tight, little mushroom! We're taking off!"

Before you could blink, the boy leaped into the air, and the winds gathered to propel you high into the sky. Through storm clouds and howling winds, you sailed safely in his arms... and into blue skies.
