On Saturday, Vic and I went to the lake. This morning, Vic had very little work left on the farm, so he had a whole day to do whatever he wanted, and he decided to start a treehouse. I went with im, full of desire to help. We used quad bikes again. I had a small trailer attached to the back of mine to fit everything we needed. Now it's all been taken out of there and laid out on the ground, ready for use.
"So where do we start?" I asked, looking up at the branches of the tree. — I need to figure out how long the floorboards should be. I'll climb up and you'll give me a couple of planks, okay? he asked.
"Okay," I nodded. Silently, I watched as Vic climbed the tree. There was nothing I could do about the fact that now I noticed some kind of awkwardness between us. And I wasn't sure was it just on my part. Maybe it's paranoia though. The whole fanfic story still confused me and made me afraid that the truth about me might come out. And I wasn't ready for it at all. When Vic settled into the branches, I handed him one of the boards. He took it and placed it at the top of one of the rifts.
"Oh great, they are big enough. True, most of them will still have to be cut off. Can you throw me a pencil, paper, and a tape measure?" Vic asked. Finding in the package what he asked for, I thought about throwing it all. However, with my luck, I'll either hit Vic and he'll fall out of the tree, or I won't be able to get it high enough at all, so I ended up climbing the tree myself. Plus, I wanted to be there to help him.
I climbed a tree and settled on a thick branch right next to Vic. He was sitting on the edge of the roofless part of the floor, leaning on the branch on which I was sitting for support.
"You could just throw them in here," he remarked as he took the package from me.
"Yeah, but other than that, I'd like to help," I said. He just nodded slightly without saying anything. It was that moment when I realized that I wasn't the only one who felt uncomfortable. He definitely behaved differently. Yesterday it seemed that everything was in order, even when he laughed at me, but now he was too quiet. Maybe it was a little selfish of me to think it was all because of me, but I couldn't understand why else he could be so silent. He was still nice, but calmer and more polite than usual. I looked at him with curiosity as he measured what he needed, and wrote down the results on paper. He was clearly uncomfortable with all this in his hands.
"Let me write down the measurements?" I suggested.
"I got it." he replied, shaking his head.
"Okay," I muttered softly. I sat there, continuing to watch. I would like to be able to do something instead of being completely useless. Vic moved away from me, along the broken boards, continuing to modify them. I didn't say anything as I would normally do. Instead, all my chatter remained in my head. I always said the dumbest things out loud anyway. But I was still worried about what was going on in his head, and keeping all these worries to myself only added to the nerves.
"You didn't tell my father about what you read last night, did you?" I finally made up my mind. Vic glanced at me before continuing his work.
"Calm down, I told you I wouldn't tell anyone," he replied.
"I know, but you are my father's friend. Aren't you supposed to kind of tell him everything? I clarified.
"Trust me," he chuckled, "I don't tell him about a lot of things.
" — Like what? I asked.
"Doesn't matter," Vic shook his head.
"I can keep secrets. Especially if you keep one about me," I said. I wasn't sure what I wanted to hear. Maybe if I knew something about Vic, it would be easier to know that he keeps my secret. Still, he didn't answer, only adding to the awkwardness of the situation. He just concentrated on what he was doing
