The next morning, I went downstairs feeling all chipper and rejuvenated. I slept in a little bit. I was tired and sore from last night, but I felt good. I was happy. I could barely contain the smile on my face all morning as I got ready for school.
I headed into the dining room and saw my dad, Vic and the triplets sitting around eating breakfast, and my dad and Vic were reading different sections of the newspaper. It took everything in me not to go over and plant a kiss on Vic's lips. It was times like these I really, really hated the whole secrecy thing. I'd love to be a normal couple, but we couldn't have that, at least not now.
"Morning!" I sang.
"You're in a good mood for a Monday." Dad said without looking up from his paper.
"Well...I'm just excited for school, I guess." I said, keeping my eyes on Vic.
He finally looked up at me and when he did he mouthed the words 'tone it down'. I smiled and nodded, looking away from him. I went in to the kitchen where my mom was.
"Hi mom!" I greeted her.
"Oh, good morning Kellin. You're in a good mood." She said.
"What's with everyone? Would ya rather I be in a bad mood?" I asked.
"Of course not. Help yourself to some cereal quick or you'll miss the bus." She said.
"Okay." I said and went about getting myself some cereal.
Once I had it I went back to the dining room and sat at the table next to Melody and started eating. This was killing me. I probably wouldn't get a chance to talk to Vic until this afternoon, if even that.
"Kelly, where'd you go last night?" Melody asked.
I froze, my eyes darting to Vic. He didn't even flinch. He was so much better at playing it cool than I was.
"What do you mean where'd I go?" I asked her.
"I had a bad dream and went to your room but you weren't there." She said.
"Yes I was," I countered, "You were probably still dreaming or sleep walking."
"Noooo. You weren't there!" She whined.
"Maybe I was in the bathroom." I said through gritted teeth. I really needed her to just shut up.
"But-"
"Melody. Leave your brother alone." Mom scolded as she came into the room.
I looked up at her, wondering if she knew anything about last night. If she did, she wasn't giving anything away. Could she tell what happened? Did I look different? Surely not. I shook the feeling and went back to eating my cereal.
"I have to go into town this morning if you want a ride to school, Kellin." Vic said.
"Sure." I said quickly.
I looked at my dad. He didn't expect anything. He was just reading his paper. In fact, I was sure he didn't hear Vic's offer at all. I looked up at mom. She didn't look at me but she had a disapproving look on her face as she shook her head. I didn't pay attention to it. She was keeping this secret from us and it was all that mattered.
I finished eating then grabbed my things, said goodbye to the others, and headed out the front of the house with Vic. Now that the others couldn't see me, I could finally smile widely. Although I was feeling so happy, I didn't really know what to say to Vic. I felt a little awkward. Happy, but awkward.
I didn't know what he was thinking. I never really did. I knew that he had to be feeling just as amazing as I was. He had to be. Last night was so special and we shared it together. I knew I'd never forget and I hoped he felt the same way.
