song of the chapter: take me to church by hozier

"there is no greater innocence than our gentle sin"

When I heard that Juliette had been shot, I rushed straight to the medical wing. Bianca and I met there, both of us extremely concerned.

We were waiting for my brother so we could heal her. Aaron came storming in, and his face turned cold when he saw Nazeera.

"Get out of here," he choked out. Her eyes widened. "I don't know how you managed this, but this is your fault. You and your brother. You did this to her."

"Aaron!" I warned.

"If you'd like to meet the man responsible," she began, flatly. "You're welcome to. He has no identification, but the tattoos on his arms indicate he might be from a neighboring sector. His dead body is in a holding cell underground."

"What?" Aaron demanded, the anger fading from his green eyes.

"Aaron?" Juliette whispered weakly from her hospital bed. He turned, kneeling by her.

"Don't worry, love," he hushed. "We're going to fix this, okay? Bianca and Aurora are here and we're going to do this again, just like last time."

"Nazeera," she started, her eyes closing

"Yes?" he froze. "What about Nazeera?"

"Saved my life," she finished, her eyes falling shut.

"Always jumping to conclusions," I teased the boy, stroking Juliette's hair with a gloved hand. With the look he gave me, I thought he might kill me.

I stared at Bianca, who was taking Juliette's vitals. Her long, red hair was pulled back in a ponytail, and her brow was furrowed in concentration.

"You can't take your eyes off me," she mused, finally peering up. I blushed, but cleared my throat. "You're blushing now? Gross."

"I'm thinking of all the ways I can snap your neck," I informed her, rolling my eyes. She smiled, shaking her head.

"I wish I could still hate you," she sighed, shaking her head. I pursed my lips, not sure how to process that.

We both perked up when we heard Juliette stirring. She shivered, jerking upward. I clutched a bucket and held it to her.

"Thanks for the bucket," she said after throwing up in it. "What's wrong with me? I thought you healed--" her eyes closed.

"The wound is fully healed," I explained. "But it looks like the poison hasn't worked its way out of her system--"

"I don't understand," Aaron mumbled, leaning against the wall. "How is that possible? Why aren't you able to heal her completely?"

"Aurora?" I heard her say. "Bianca?"

"Yes?" we answered in unison.

"Can you do something about the sun?" she begged. "It's too bright." I furrowed my eyebrows, turning to Bianca. There was no sun.

"Drink this," I said, handing her a cup of water. "Your body is severely dehydrated."

She gulped the water down, so I handed her another glass. She had drank five glasses before she was done.
