song of the chapter: you're on your own kid by taylor swift

"i hosted parties and starved my body like i'd be saved by a perfect kiss. the jokes weren't funny, i took the money, my friends from home don't know what to say. i looked around in a blood soaked gown and i saw something they can't take away."

"Are you serious about escaping with her?" I asked him as he stood there, staring at me in disbelief.

"Are you serious about helping me?" he countered with a frown.

I nodded. I could tell he didn't quite believe me. Hell, I didn't believe the words leaving my lips either.

I really liked Juliette. And I knew what it was like to be isolated and forced to be someone you weren't. I knew what it was like to have no one. And I wanted to be there for her.

"Yes, I think I am," I decided.

"You think?" he stressed, narrowing his eyes in suspicion.

"I will," I declared. "After what he did, I don't know, I just feel bad for her. But I'll only help under one condition."

"What's that?" he sighed, almost rolling his eyes.

"I would like to go with you," I announced.

I was sick of the repetitive nature of my job. I was tired of being scared of my father showing up unannounced. I was done fighting with Aaron over every little thing.

"You want to go with us?" he repeated, staring at me like I was insane.

"Yes, I want to get out of here," I explained, hushing my voice to a whisper and glancing around. "I can be useful, don't worry."

"Are you serious?" he demanded, crossing his arms in exasperation.

"Very," I confirmed with a firm nod.

"What's your plan?" he wondered, squinting at me.

"I'll convince my brother to do a drill that will get everyone out of the building," I stated. "I don't know when, but just stay with her. I'll find you guys." He nodded.

"Thanks, kid," he remarked, placing his hand on my shoulder.

"Do not touch me," I warned him.

"This is a code seven. All soldiers must report to the Quadrant immediately. This is a code seven," I heard.

I sighed, making my way down the spiral staircases to get out the door. I waited under their window for them to make their escape.

Soon enough, Adam was on his way down. I held onto the bag I had packed as he climbed down the rope.

"I'm gonna catch her," he informed me as he hit the ground. I scoffed at the thought.

"Yeah, you're gonna kill yourself," I pointed out, shaking my head. "She can just climb down."

She finally made her way down the rope. Adam was shouting at her to jump, but she wasn't listening.

I didn't blame her; it was a far fall. But soldiers were trying to reel the rope back into the room.

She finally let go and fell into Adam's arms. I didn't even have time to be shocked at his perfectly fine state before we bolted.
