I sling my bag over my shoulder and walk to the training centre, technically it's against the rules to train but no one stops us. The doors open and I walk into the girls locker room, not many girls train but those who do train to enter the games. I change out of my clothes and into a sports bra and yoga pants, it's a cooler day here in district four.
"Ready for today?" Gemma asks, tying her shoes up
"Always" I smile and she laughs
"I don't know why you train, you're the most skilled here" She says, standing up and I smile wider. Yes, I am talented but I'm not the most skilled.
"Thank you, but I am not" I say and we walk into the arena. There's only a small group this morning, it usually is a small group.
"Morning Y/n" Beckett says with his signature smile.
"Good morning" I smile, quickly braiding my golden hair. Beckett and I could be siblings, we look similar with the exception of my aqua blue eyes and his seaweed green eyes. Beckett has been my training partner since I was fourteen and he was fifteen. I know his weaknesses as well as his strengths and he knows mine."What do you want to start with?" He asks and I start stretching, there's been a tension in the air with the Hunger Games looming closer.
"Sparing?" I suggest and he sighs
"We always spar, lets like run" He says and I nod
"Sure" I wipe off my shoes as we head outside. As soon as we open the door a heat wave blasts us and sweat immediately beads on my forehead. It seems as though everyday the sun is getting hotter and hotter. I start off in a slow jog Beckett follows me and we run around town. People pass us, smiling but there's another look behind the smile, sadness. I shake it off and run faster. I'm training to die.
"Y/n" Beckett pants and I look at him "are you really going into the games?" He asks as we slow down near the beaches. I put my hands on top of my head dripping sweat
"I don't know" I pant and he sits down, watching me. "Are you?" I ask
"Not if I can help it" He says and I frown slightly
"Why have we been training then?" I ask, anger creeping into my voice"Because I enjoy being around you" He says and for some reason my anger flickers. Why was that the answer I wasn't expecting? Beckett stands up and grabs my wrist, leading me towards the water.
"I'm in my training clothes" I say, crossing my arms. He smiles at me mischievously, He grabs my waist and throws me over his shoulder. "Beck" I shriek, I let out a laugh as he walks onto the dock."You give me no choice Y/n" He says and jumps in, me still on his shoulder. Water surrounds me and Beckett pulls me down so I'm eye level with him. He then pushes me further down but I grab his ankle, pulling myself up and I paddle to the dock. The water is rejuvenating on my hot skin. My hair floats in the water like golden algae, peacefully floating. Beckett paddles over to me with a stupid grin on his face.
"I hate you" I shove his shoulder with a smile and he rolls his eyes
"Sure you do" he smiles and pushes me onto the dock with one arm. He is remarkably strong. The sun glistens off his face and I find myself admiring his faint freckles, they're scattered around his face in a mesmerizing fashion. Like stars. "What?" He asks and I blink, I've been staring.
"Nothing" I shake my head and he pulls himself onto the dock
"Okay weirdo" He says and I roll my eyes. "N/n?" He asks after a few moments of silence, looking at the water. N/n. The nickname only Beckett uses
"Yeah?" I look at him.
"Please don't volunteer for the games" He says and my eyebrows flick up, shocked.
