~~~Hailee’s POV~~~
Oh fuck. Oh fuck. Oh fuck. I said it. I said it, and she doesn’t seem to be having any epiphanies about how I act around her. So, maybe it’s okay. Okay. We are fine. Jesus. When we get back to my place, y/n goes to get her laptop, and Flo smacks my arm. “You did it!”
“Yeah, I’m freaking out,” I admit.
“Trust me, she is too.” Flo mumbles. I just ignore her. Y/n calls us into the living room so we can look at the pictures she got in her email, and I am super happy with how they turned out. As soon as she's done gushing about the editing, I tell her she isn’t allowed to work any more tonight. She listens, but she doesn’t go down without a fight. Always overachieving. I look through the games she brought over and pick Catan. Flo picks the food, and we start playing. Y/n gets excited when she’s explaining the rules, Flo has played before, but I haven’t and it’s a little distracting how cute y/n is when she’s telling me how everything works. After I’ve gotten the hang of it, I feel like it’s been too quiet.
“Music?” I ask them both.
“Mind if I pick?” Y/n asks.
“It’s your day, obviously you pick.” I smile as she grabs the TV remote, opening the Spotify app. After a second, she’s playing some jazz-sounding band I’ve never heard of. They’re pretty good, though. “Who’s this band?”
“Oh, this is Sammy Rae And The Friends, they’re my favorite band.” She’s vibing, I can tell, swaying as she plots her next move in the game. “The next song is from my other favorite band, Melt. Similar vibe.”
“I like the saxophone!” Flo says, “And the vocals! Such control.”
“I know! So good. This is my favorite of their songs, cause coming up there’s this- Ooh! Right here!” She starts to sing along with the track, but stops fast, her face turning red. This song shows a lot more range and technique than her backing me in the studio, and I’m impressed, even with that little bit.
“You’ve been holding out on me, y/n!” I say, giving her a light shove. She hides her face in the crook of her arm in embarrassment.
“I told you I have a Musical theatre degree,” she mumbles.
“Show us some more skills!” Flo pokes her in the side.
“No! Stop! You’re literally famous people!”
“So? You have a really pretty voice, y/n,” Flo says.
“Sammy’s out of my range anyway.” Y/n says, trying to avoid accepting the compliment.
“What’s your favorite Melt song? Can you sing that?” Flo is being a little pushy.
“Uh, it’s called Brown Eyes. And technically, yes. But, I’m not performing for you guys, seriously.” She is starting to look a little uncomfortable, and I step in.
“You don’t have to. Flo, leave her alone.” a second after I say it, the doorbell rings.
“I’ll get it!” Y/n says, and jumps up. When she leaves the room, Flo leans closer to me.
“Did you see how she just looked at you?”
“What? No, why were you being so pushy?”
“Because I knew you’d defend her if she really didn’t want to sing. I’m a really good wingwoman, obviously.” Flo rolls her eyes at me.
“You’re delusional, she isn’t into me,” I insist.
“She just looked at you like you hung the moon, Hailee.” Before I can digest that, y/n returns, laden with takeout bags. We all spread the food out around the game, and continue our little celebration. We have a few drinks, and after a while, a song starts with “Brown eyes, forgive me”, and I know this is the one y/n mentioned earlier. It’s more low key than the rest of her playlist, and it’s really sweet. She lightly hums with it, and I can tell it would sound lovely in her voice, but I’m not drunk enough to ask her to sing it. Not knowing how she feels about her own talents. When the song ends, I grin at her.
“So, was that like your favorite song ever, or just your favorite song by Melt?” I ask her as the next song starts.
“Uh, it’s probably my favorite right now. My favorite song changes pretty often,” her cheeks turn pink and she looks down sheepishly.
“Good choice,” I wish I could say anything else. Just-she’s too cute. We play another game for like an hour, and seeing Y/n’s competitive side is so fun. At one point, she gets up to go to the bathroom, and Flo giggles. “What?”
“You’re so smitten.”
“Shut up.”
