Curled in a frigid ball of cold under the sink, my ragged teddy bear mushed tightly against chest. The bathrooms tiled walls trapping me in as if I were in a prison, sucking every ounce of heat from my feeble frame.
I crouch low, my head bowed to my grubby feet. The tips of my toes purpling like a frozen Winter's day.
The room is almost pitch black, a soft ray sneaking in through the crack in the ajar door. The lights warmth pulling me in, like a beckon to safety. I watch as shadows dance over the grounds shining beam like a puppet show. My curious eyes watching intently as I rock forwards onto my knees, eager to crawl along the icey ground for a better view.
Imagining the warmth radiating through me as the light embellishes my skin. I shut my eyes trying to envision it, blocking out the rhythmic dripping from the broken shower head. I press my palms down, squeezing my fingertips against the slick tiles to keep myself from slipping. I breathe in steadily, the pungent flavour of mold leaving a sour taste in my mouth. I swallow dryly, glancing at the pitiful pile of wet towels stacked up in the bath. Bacteria from who knows where thriving within the damp layers, bringing to life generations of undesirables.
Scratching my unkempt birds nest, crumbs of dandruff falling with my hand. I turn to face the light once more, ignoring the persistent itch deep within my mess of dreadies.
I catch a glimpse of my older sister hidden beneath the dining table, keeping to the shadows for protection.
The look in her eyes makes me want to cry. Her gaze holds so much emotion, sadness, fear, anger and frustration. My heart aches for her. I crawl forwards reaching my shaky arm out, wanting to help her and ease her concerns.
"Get out of my sight!"
I flinch, cowering away.
My back slamming against the wall harshly, pain shooting through me as I knock my head on the bottom of the ceramic basin. I slap my palm over my mouth, suppressing my whimpers. My eyes wide and glossy with fear, listening to the taunting echos of anger ricocheting off of the bathroom walls. I cover my ears and squeeze my eyes shut, wishing to escape.
Lying hidden beneath the covers of a destroyed bed, I peer out into the night.
Movement by the window catching my sleepy attention, I retreat into my den. Tucking my bear under my arm and peeking out with slanted eyes.
My eyelids heavy and under eyes droopy, with large suitcases dragging them down. I muffle a yawn, blinking slowly as the stunning moonlight glows down on a short figure. Their silhouette slim, moving in absolute silence. Their steps careful and orchestrated, avoiding every single creaky floorboard as if they had walked them a thousand times memorizing them like a dance routine. Breath as soft as the wind.
I watch them as if it were a spy movie, the person's guard up to the point that if a pin dropped they'd react at lightning speed. Perhaps throwing a few smoke bombs to create a distraction and provide me entertainment.
The door knob twists under their grip, opening as the person pushes it free from it's position. Light pouring in from the living room, causing my eyes to burn like a vampire to the suns light. Upon, visual adjustments I distinguish the ragged brown hair and hazel orbs staring forwards in determination; not a single hesitation.
"Big sister?" I whisper into the silence, her head snapping in my direction with looks that could kill. I jump backwards in fear, sitting up and wrapping the blanket over my head and around me for safety. "W-where are you going?" I stutter, leaning forwards once the pounding in my little heart eases.
