"You're going to be released soon, how do you feel about that?" Ken starts up a conversation from his seat beside my hospital bed.
"Hmm," I hum, looking down at my folded hands. "I'm not so sure," I mumble under my breath. The thought of possibly being sent back to the foster homes sounding more like a life sentence than a release to freedom.
"What was that?" he leans forwards, tucking strands of hair behind my ear, my stomach churns with butterflies as I stray away from his touch with flushed cheeks.
"I'm sure there will be plenty of cleaning to do when I get home," I try to cover, smiling lightly.
"Don't worry, I will help you. After all, you'll be on bed rest, so cleaning is the last thing you need to worry about," he clarifies.
"You really don't need to do that," I wave my hands shyly. "Besides, won't your girlfriend get jealous that you've been spending so much time with me?" I question shamefully.
"Girlfriend? What are you talking about?" He furrows his brows, creating a crease between the two.
"I saw you with her at the festival the other night, she had blonde hair and I believe you called her," I pause, placing my finger on my lip in thought. "Emma?" I lean forwards for a better view of his expression, believing I got the correct name.
"Emma isn't my girlfriend," he retorts.
"You don't have to hide it, you guys make a cute couple," I smile over gritted teeth, my heart aching at the distaste of my own words.
I notice a twitch in his right brow; irritation. I retreat, seeping back into the safety of my cushions as he sighs aloud. "You've got it wrong, she's just a friend, Mikey's sister to be exact and I am not interested in her," he explains, resting his elbows on his knees.
"How can you be so sure?" I wonder.
His eyes widen in shock, but he recovers quickly. "Because I already have feelings for someone else," he shoots smoothly, like a bullet to my heart. "How about you?"
"What about me?" I tilt my head, slightly confused.
"Well, is there somebody you're into?" His dark eyes bore right into mine, making me suddenly feel insecure, hugging myself uncomfortably.
"Uh, n-not really," I stutter, acknowledging the way my heart flutters everytime our eyes meet.
"That wasn't convincing," he chuckles, gently squeezing my lower thigh making me flinch.
A knock resounds from the door, making me jump again, this time a pain returning to my back with the motion.
"Kimiko, you have a guest," a nurse claims, a tall, slender woman following in right behind her before I could even argue. Nibbling nervously on my lower lip I study the incoming female, fiddling uneasily with the hem of my cotton sheets.
"Well well, long time no see," the tall woman struts to the end of my bed, resting her hands on her accentuated hips. "You caused a lot of trouble, you know?" she leans forwards, using the bed-frame for support, her long ponytail falling over her shoulder as she stares down at me. An uncomfortable lump forming in the back of my parched throat, as a sense of nausea washes over me like waves on the beach.
She was dressed in a blue uniform; a police's uniform to be precise and I know exactly who she is. Pressing my fingertips anxiously between the bed sheets, inhaling steadily to control my emotions.
"Rita," I mouth lowly, my muscles tight and stare cold.
"Nice to know you still remember me," she smirks, eyes closing in on Draken who I didn't notice stood up defensively before me. "Relax boy," she snickers tauntingly, as I avert my gaze to him.
