I chew on the end of my pen, jotting down notes as I listen to the instructor explain the basics of algebra.
High-lighting key points and formulas as she explains the best structure to solve my equation. I pause the video to give it ago myself, covering the simple steps of BIMDAS to find an answer.
School starts in less than two weeks and I want to be as prepared as possible, so when my tutor isn't around I recover the information she gave me. Drilling the knowledge into my head in the hopes that it will be enough.
SLAM!
I jump back in my seat, dropping my pen to the floor. Glancing up, I'm met with Ken's fury. His stare deadly, brows drawn in and his mouth drawn back in a snarl. I blink a few times in confusion as I remove my ear buds, placing them beside the laptop that he just slammed shut.
"What did I miss?" I tilt my head to the side curiously.
"Are you serious?" he growls, leaning forward to get a closer look at my dumb founded expression. "Are you not wondering how I got into your house?" his eyes soften slightly and I shake my head in response.
He shakes his head in disappointment, pulling a chair out beside me. "Kimiko, you didn't even lock your front door," he acknowledges, using my full name to show his annoyance. "I don't care how good the security is here, you shouldn't be neglecting your own safety. Anyone can just walk through your door and what's worse, is you wouldn't even hear the bloody intruder coming," he scolds, lifting up my earphones for emphasis. "And then what?"
"You're over-reacting, it was a one off," I try to brush past the topic, bending down to pick up my pen that I dropped earlier.
My world blurs in a flurry of motion, my heart pounding in shock as I look up to find Ken pointing the non-pointy end of the pen at my throat. My back shoved up against the back of the dining chair, that is now standing on its hind legs. Ken leaning over me, with his spare hand gripping the back of the chair to keep it from falling. I struggle for air, the close proximity and sudden aggression setting me off.
"W-what are you doing?" I choke out in a gasp.
"You said I was over-reacting, so prove to me how you would defend yourself against an intruder," he stares directly into my eyes, awaiting a response. I open my mouth to speak, but nothing comes out as my brain struggles to keep up with the situation. I watch him watch me, each moment proving his point as a proud smirk slips over his face.
My blood boils beneath my skin, anger infiltrating my senses.
What the he!! is his problem? He's acting as if I'm some incompetent girl, all because I forgot to lock the damn door. I admit it was a foolish mistake on my behalf, but this is ridiculous.
I'm sick of him treating me like his damsel in distress, the more I let him in the more he thinks I need protecting. He sees my trauma as a weakness, when really it's what has made me so strong. If not for the past I wouldn't be where I am now, whether that is for better or worse.
I've experienced all kinds of shit, as if I don't know that forgetting to lock the door was dumb.
I make mistakes and I don't need him patronizing me for it!
"F**k off!" I push my hands flat against his shoulders, forcing him back and bringing my seat down on all fours. I glare up at him, his expression stunned. Taking his confusion as an opportunity, I dart past him, my shoulder colliding with him in a hurry.
"Kimi!" his voice breaks as I scurry out of his reach, tears pricking the corners of my eyes.
My vision blurs with un-fallen tears as I scramble out of the dining room, Draken hot on my tail.
