The Phone Call

"Red or blue?" "Blue!" "Pink or red?" "Pink!" Mrs. Bowers stood in front of Kimmy's bedroom closet mirror admiring her highschool class reunion pennants. Prancing about in excitement. What's she so peachy about? Thought Kimmy. "I don't see why we have to go to the town hall today? This place is weird. I don't like it one bit. I don't like it at all. Couldn't we've stayed home?" "This is home." Why'd we come here? Out of all places, here?" Mrs. Bowers shrugged. Dropping her shoulders to the side holding the blue pennant in left hand and red scarf in the other. She gently sat on the edge of the bed releasing a heavy sigh. Shrugging heavily before replying, "Remember your freshman year at Lakeside High when you were nervous about making the cheer squad?" Kimmy sighed, with a brief glare gently sitting beside Kim. A flood of memories came racing back. A warm chill

circulated through those scrawny, yet athletic little bones. A concerned facial expression

unexpectedly landed on Kimmy's face. Still feeling a bit sore from the accident in Cullen's room. Rubbing the back of her head in all sincerity as Mom went on and on reminiscing about Lakeside High. A cold chill filtered the room. Beginning to feel uneasy, Kimmy quickly stood to her feet. It all came racing back. The cat in the closet, Freckles missing, Cullen stuck in the floor, the lawn service, a vague memory of falling with a sickening thud. Is Cullen holding back? Does he know more than he's putting off? So many thoughts rummaged through her head. I know I'm not imagining things? All I hear is that voice; "Good boy, now roll over. At it boy! At it boy!" Glaring out the window, just then, thinking a figure quickly dashed past the tree into the bushes. She walked slowly toward the window. Oblivious, still perked at the edge of the bed blabbering on and on and on. You could hear in the background Kim's tiny little voice as Kimmy approached the window. Her sparkling eyes glared out into the yard daring for such a figure. Taking a deep breath listening to the intense momentum of her heartbeat. The wind howled humming against the window as crackling leaves flourished in a frenzy. A breeze sifted through the slightly ajar window. Evening due moist filtered the air as a thick branch from the tall tree that stood next to Kimmy's window gently tapped against the windowpane. Unable to quite make out if it was something or someone, or was it just the bush swaying back and forth due to strong wind. A cold chill made the hair on her neck stand up as she proceeded toward the window. A mist of trickling frost slowly began outlining the window until only able to peer out the middle. "Oh goodness! You should've seen Cullens face when we surprised him on his 5th birthday. Freckles was just a little pa-." Interrupted in mid sentence, Cullen stormed into the room with an anxious look with his arms extended in the doorway. Mom turned her attention to Cullen. "Honey, is everything ok?" Mom spoke in a concerning manner. Cullen was breathing hard as if he'd been running. Trying to catch his breath as he frantically spoke. "Huh", taking a deep breath and swallowing. "The food is burning!" Just then, mom remembered the pot of Shrimp Alfredo roasting on the stove. "Oh frantic." Murmured Kim in a mellow tone hopping to her feet and dashing out the room with Cullen. You could see and hear them babble in a frenzy down the hall, down the steps and out of view. You could hear Cullen echoing down the hall. "Mom, get the oven glove, quick!" In a loud shrill voice. Moms tv sounded across the hall. Scary horror screams and creepy screeching sounds. Kimmy finally stood in front of the window breathing heavily. I know I saw something? It ran into the bushes? Confused and curious gazing down into the yard with a puzzled look. Out of all the houses in the neighborhood, why does ours look the creepiest? Tssk. Her eyes shifted to the fence. Tssk. It's coming from the other side of the yard. Shhkk. There it is again. Squinting her eyes trying to make out the strange noises. Just then, something scared Kimmy. It terrified her. It made her heart almost jump out her skin. A black cat pounced from out of the bushes dashing into the dem evening through an opening in the fence. Sending Kimmy hurling backwards falling over her stuffed animal. What am I doing? Thought Kimmy. I gotta get a grip. I'm freaking out. Stop overthinking regaining balance reaching down to pick her brown Teddy bear when all of a sudden. Ring, ring, ring, startled, dropping the bear once more as the phone rang. What is wrong with me? Thought Kimmy. A little frustrated at being so jumpy. She stood by the bed staring at the phone on the nightstand like she'd seen a ghost, almost in shock, slowly approaching the phone. Ring, ring, ring, ring. Answer the phone she told herself. Extending her left hand for the receiver. Boom! The loud thunder scared her. Quickly pulling her hand away before picking up. Taking a deep breath before picking up the receiver. Kimmy slowly put the phone to her ear. A brief pause then a raspy voice spoke on the other end. "Kimmy, ssssth" in a faint distant tone. She heard a voice in a staticky whispering tone. Her hand trembled with fear. "Who's there?" Kimmy quickly murmured with a frightening expression. Almost rasp mid tone response. "Kimmy." "What do you want? You can't stay! Get out! Leave me alone! Just leave, me, aloooone!" "Kimmy, Kimmy!" In a trance unable to move in shock by the creepy little voice coming from the other side of the receiver. Then a loud shrill followed by beeeep. A loud shrieking sound followed by a deep creepy voice telling her to "get out!" So loud and so clear as if to come through the receiver made her drop the phone covering her ears in despair. "Kimmy! Kimmy!" A voice cried aloud, shaking her shoulders trying to get her attention. "Leave me alone! Go away, please go away." She kept repeating over and over again after dropping the phone as the person tried to get her attention to snap out of it. "Whoa, hey watch it!" Turning in mid stride swinging her right arm in the direction of the voice. "You almost hit me." A voice spoke. Realizing who it was still in shock. "Sorry." "Kimmy are you ok?" "I'm fine mom, just a little tired that's all. I'm fine mom, really." Murmured Kimmy in an exhausting tone. Kim's gentle voice calmed her, walking her to the bed. Kim's sympathizing glare with a concerned look made sure her daughter felt secure. Her restless eyes looked up as mom beamed out the room. She looks great, Kimmy thought. Guess she's been getting enough rest finally. I hate this place. We need to leave. I don't want to be here. Oh, I feel so anxious and nauseous. I wanna lay down but can't. I'm trying but can't stop thinking about all these creepy things that are happening. She picked up the sky blue house phone, placing it back on the nightstand. What's he up to? Kimmy heard Cullen laughing so loud through the walls. She sat upright rising from a sunken position off the bed. Startled by the phone ringing made Kimmy jump. Quickly turning her head in despair. Her heart beat twice as fast. Opening those bulky eyes rising from the bed slowly walking towards the linoleum nightstand. Studying the phone. Hovering over the nightstand, constantly ringing. Palms sweaty and nervous reaching for the phone. Click. Slowly putting the receiver to her right ear. Heavy breathing on the other end. Repetitive blinking nervously holding the phone to her ear with her mouth gaped open but no words came out. The static grew grim, long and distant. Closing her eyes, taking a deep breath struggling to get the words out. Before she could respond, a rasp staticky voice spoke on the other end. "H- h- hello? Ca Can I speak to Kimmy?" Kimmy let out a sigh of relief. It was a familiar voice. No, not a spooky phenomenon. A very calming voice. "Kelsey, is that you?" Murmured Kimmy. With a sigh of relief. "I- I tried calling earlier but lost signal. Guess the storm intervened." You could hear the nervousness in his voice. "It was a pretty bad storm." "Th- There's something I wanted to ask you." "Yeah" Kimmy murmured; trying not to seem so excited with those rosy red cheeks. All the stuttering in the world couldn't save him from the fact that he really liked Kimmy. He knew it too. You could hear the nervousness in his voice. "It took you long enough to answer, afraid of the boogie man? Wooo! Boogidy boogidy." Kelsey sarcastically muttured. "Ha ha very funny." Kimmy murmured in a soft tone. Small rain droplets trickled down the window as they spoke. Kimmy was feeling so happy. An overwhelming excitement in forgetting all about why she was so angry. About how mad she was. "Are you busy Friday?" Kelsey shot. "I don't think so." Kimmy shot back. "How about we meet up at The Old Antique Shop?" "How bout you come here for dinner?" "Over there? For dinner?" Sounding unsure of himself. "Yes, here. Friday night. Unless you're afraid. " "No, I'm not afraid." Quickly responding to Kimmy's invitation. Just then Cullen appeared in the doorway with his tongue out moving his hips side to side teasing Kimmy. She lowered her eyes with an irritable stare as he continued to tease her. "It'll just be me and my freakishly annoying little brother." Kimmy continued. "Am not!" Chimed Cullen. "Are too!" Kimmy sarcastically swallowed. Kelsey chuckled and you could still hear the thin branch still softly tapping on the window. Cullen started chanting, "Kimmy's got a boyfriend, Kimmy's got a boyfriend, nah nan nah nah!" Shaking his hips with his hands to his ears and tongue out teasing. "Get out! Lil brat!" Kimmy pretended after Cullen. Cullen shot past the room and swiftly down the hall. "Ha ha too slow." "Lil weasel. Gosh he's quick." Kimmy muttered. Putting the receiver to ear. "Kelsey?" "Yeah." "Sorry, that was my insanely pesty little brother." "Well aren't you the lucky one?" "You wish!" "Kimmy?" "Yeah." "How is it that you go to Lakeside but live in Mehlville?" "Wouldn't you like to know?" "Well, who am I to nose around? I live in Bel-Ridge but tend Mehlville." "Mehlville?" "Yeah, why?" "Nothing na nothing." "Oh." "Do you have any brothers or sisters?" "An older sister. I haven't seen God knows when. We favor but, how would I know? It's been years since I've seen her." "Kelsey!" "Just a minute." A voice rang in the background. Listening to a click in the receiver. Kimmy waited patiently at the edge of the bed. Scuffles before a voice spoke. "Kimmy?" "Yeah." "That was my mom she." A brief pause then Kimmy chimed; "Is everything ok?" "Just helped her put away some things, no biggie." She couldn't stop smiling. Glad he can't see my expression. Her rosy cheeks lit listening to Kelsey on the other end. "So where'd you say you stayed?" Kelsey murmured. Kimmy took a deep breath carefully blocking all the horrors ever since moving in. Closing her eyes before responding. Taking a deep breath slowly speaking into the receiver. Opening her eyes to an empty quiet room. "1648 Mehlville Hills." "You stay in that house?" Kelsey cleared his throat. "Yeah why?" Sitting on the edge of the bed curiously waiting for an answer. Just then, Cullen chimed standing in the doorway before Kelsey could respond. Cullen's freakishly annoying little voice startled Kimmy. "What's the matter, you scared?" Slowly walking towards Kimmy all spooky eyed. Kimmy lowered her eyes scalding Cullen. "Get out of here you little weirdo!" Heaving a pillow at Cullen as he quickly dashed out of the room laughing down the hall. "Ha ha, missed me sucker!" "Little brat!" You could hear the door slam to his room. "Kelsey?" "Yeah!" "Are you afraid?" "Afraid of what?" "You know what. This, this house?" "That's absurd. Why would I be afraid?" "I don't know, are you?" Kimmy murmured as if reassuring the question. "Not at all." Kelsy calmly reiterated. A Sudden pause before Kimmy broke the silence. "So you sounded a little uneasy when I told you where I live?" "Oh , no, it's fine. I didn't mean- well there is something." "Ha! I knew it." "Story has it that a long time ago a family lived in that house. A brother, sister, mother and father. In 1648 something horrible happened. Something terrifying." Kelsey cleared his throat with sweaty fingers proceeding with the story. "It was Halloween night. Windy and cold. The night lay still. No sound or signs of life." Kimmy formed a mental outview as Kelsey told the story. "And then there were screams followed by loud sickening thuds. They found the entire family with their heads cut off in each room. That poor boy was only 8. He had a puppy. I think his name was Spots. The mother and father lay next to each other sitting propped up beside each other in the bed with their heads stitched back together. But the weirdest thing. The little girl. "The little girl?" "Her wrist was split but everything else was in place. As if never touched." Kimmy heart dropped beating twice as fast nervously clenching the phone so tight unaware as perspiration trickled down her neck. Gathering herself all at once clearing her throat before responding. "Well I'm not scared. Are you scared?" Waiting for a creepy reaction, but in all surprise none came. "No, not at all." Kelsey murmured. "Great! Then you can come over for dinner Friday!" She sounded so excited forgetting how shy she is around boys. "Unless you're too chicken to come over." Kimmy teased. "Well I'm not afraid at all." Chimed Kelsey. "Great then it's settled."
