The first day in any new department is essentially awaiting the Head of Department's arrival and reporting to them.
First days can be daunting. However if your first 'day' is a 24 hour duty that begins with a Night Duty, it can be insanely frightening. I did get the morning off, so I suppose there was a silver lining and the work is apparently relaxed.
But until this is out of the way, my mind will be hyperalert, irritable and anxious. (Cue intense urge to meditate)
I have to leave soon for the hospital; My first hours as a doctor. I can't help but think 'please don't screw up'. But after a few therapeutic conversations with friends and family, I've been telling myself this: 'my first hours as a doctor, this is everything I've ever worked for!'
