"𝗔m i dreaming?" abby muttered, rubbing her eyes as she stepped into the hallway. frankie was up, dressed, and lacing her shoes.
"you're up early," abby squinted at her phone. "i still have twenty-five more minutes until i have to bang on your door so you won't be late."
"things change. people change, sis." frankie flashed a small smile before dashing back into her room to grab her bag.
the doorbell rang.
abby, still holding her half-poured cup of coffee, padded to the front door and opened it.
"lucas?" she blinked. "what are you doing here?"
"i'm here for frankie," he chuckled, scratching the back of his neck. "guess she hasn't told you yet."
frankie appeared behind her sister, trying not to grin.
"i'll tell you everything after school. i promise."
"oh, you better." abby rolled her eyes but smirked as frankie tugged lucas away.
"love you!" frankie called over her shoulder.
lucas gently shifted frankie to the right side of the sidewalk. "are we ever going to talk about what happened at school?" he asked softly. "i don't want you to shut me out again. i need to know what's going on in here." he tapped her forehead lightly.
truth was frankie was scared. she'd never been in a relationship, never had a crush until him.
"and i want nothing but honesty," he added. "i can feel you cooking up a lie."
frankie laughed, wrapping both arms around his right one. "i'm not lying. i'm just... trying to find the right words."
"there's no rush," he said gently.
after a long silence, she finally blurted, "i'm ready, but i'm scared."
lucas glanced at her. she wasn't looking at him.
"i've never felt this way before. never told someone i liked them, never kissed a boy. and i hate being lied to, so not knowing if you're hiding something!freaks me out. i don't know texas lucas. i want to."
she furrowed her brow, watching his reaction.
"moral of the story?" she added with a weak smile. "i'm scared of getting hurt."
"i'm not hiding anything from you," lucas said immediately. "you know everything about me."
frankie nodded. "i know new york lucas. but texas lucas? that's a blank page."
