𝗙rankie thomas beamed as she limped into the classroom, her red curls bouncing with every uneven step. her crutches clicked softly against the tile before she stopped just inside the door, eyes scanning the familiar room. she'd missed it. her favorite class.

"where do i sit?" elle asked with a bright grin.

"behind me," frankie replied, gesturing casually to the desk behind his.

frankie dropped her backpack to the floor with a soft thud and handed her crutches over to lucas, her eyes silently pleading.

"can you put those by the wall for me, please?"

"of course," he said without hesitation, carefully leaning the crutches against the side wall near the window just as the bell rang sharply overhead.

the classroom buzzed as students rushed in, and that's when maya and riley strolled through the door, laughing at some inside joke like they still owned the place.

"they're in this class too?" elle asked flatly, trying not to let the shift in her tone give too much away.

"sadly." frankie says causing lucas to shoot her a look one of those firm, green-eyed looks that said don't start.

"be nice."

frankie rolled her eyes, but before she could respond, mr. matthews clapped his hands together and addressed the room from the front.

"all right. so, should we actually learn about what happened in belgium in 1831?"

"no!" farkle's voice rang out dramatically from the middle row, drawing everyone's attention.

"no?" mr. matthews repeated, amused.

"i always get my hopes up, and then something happens to hurt my little farkle heart. well, this time, i refuse to believe," he declared, pointing an accusatory finger at the universe. "in 1831..."

"yes? wait!" mr. matthews glanced quickly to his daughter. "anything going to suddenly happen to you?"

"no changes. lovin' life," riley responded, all smiles and sunshine.

he turned to lucas. "anything going to happen to you?"

"nothing ever happens to me," lucas shrugged with a half-smile.
