TW: brief mention of suicide
The case was closed, the exorcism successful, the evil cast out. Or at least that's what Lorraine Warren told herself on the drive back home from Harrisville Rhode Island to Monroe Connecticut. But with this particular case it wasn't enough. Yes her physical injuries would heal (only a few nasty bruises and minor cuts, nothing major) but the memory of the last 72 hours would stay with her forever.
The body hanging from the tree, the little boy in the glass doors reflection, the maid who killed herself, Carolyn levitating in her chair. Oh and her daughters body floating in the lake. Lorraine watching her drift by helplessly, knowing there was nothing she could do.
She tried to shake the memories from her mind and instead focus on the trees rushing by them, the scenery really was beautiful. Her fingers fidgeted with the beads of her rosary wrapped tightly around her hand. It had become a habit of hers in recent years. It reminded her that God was watching over them, protecting them.
Her eyes glazed over, her vision becoming a blur of green from the passing trees. She hadn't even realized how far inside her head she was when Ed's voice brought her back to reality, "Hon, whatcha thinking about? You got that far away look in your eyes." His eyes flickered between the road and her.
"Hm?" She turned to him.
"I said, what are you thinking about?" She looked down in her lap and fidgeted with her rosary more.
"Oh you know," she paused and looked up at him, "just the usual stuff."
