Thank you for reading this fanfiction. I know I said wouldn't post anything today, but SURPRISE!! I will continue when James arrives at the Avengers tower. Thank you for your support and feel free to post any comments!
James parked the Tesla and unbuckled Natalee and rested her on his hip. He texted his dad. I'm here, where are you. James walked into the building and stopped when he felt his phone vibrate. The Lake. Hurry, there's something I need to tell you. James hurried to the lake .
When he came into the view of the team, he walked faster to his dad. When he got closer he called his father's name. "Dad!" Steve turned around and saw his son. James stopped beside his father and cautiously looked around. The team eyed James and Natalee with confused expressions all except Clint.
"Dadda," Natalee babbled, holding her arms out to Steve. Steve, loosing all formality, grabbed his daughter. "Hey Natalee!" Steve started to baby talk his 4 month daughter. Tony looked at Steve suspiciously. "Hey, Cap who are these kids?"
Steve turned to Tony. "These are my kids. This is James and the little one is Natalee." Tony is shocked. "Natalee as is in Natalie Romanov? As in Natasha?" Steve nodded. James caught eye of Clint and beamed brightly. "Uncle Clint!" Clint walks up to his adopted nephew. "What's up stinker?" The two have a moment sharing their own special handshake, then ending it with a hug.
-In the Avengers Tower-
"You gonna explain all this, Cap?" Tony questioned. Steve started explaining. "After James was born after the battle with Ultron, we decided it would protect our family by not telling anybody and risk having our weaknesses out in the open for our enemies to use against us."
"Yea, but why not tell us? Why tell Barton and not us?" Hulk asked. Steve nodded. "Natasha only wanted to tell Barton as a way in repaying him for telling her about his secret family." Everyone nodded.
"Dad, where's mom? Nat's getting hungry." James observed looking a Natalee sucking on her bare feet.
Clint sniffled. "I'm so sorry, James." Clint's head hanged low. "I tried to save her, I tried to jump off that dang cliff." James looked at the team's expressions. Sadness and regret. "What are you saying Uncle Clint?" There was tears in Barton's eyes. "I'm so sorry, James. Especially little Natalee, who never even got to know her mother."
"Clint, you don't have to . . ." Steve said softly.
"No, I have to. I was there when she died."
There was a soft gasp from James. His eyes were wide with shock. Clint sniffled. "I'm sorry. She's not coming back."
"How?" James managed to say. "How'd she die?" Anger suddenly clouded his eyes. "She promised," His anger morphed into sadness. "She promised she'd come back . . ."
Clint continued. "To-to get the Soul Stone, one of us had to sacrifice the one we loved. W-we fought for who would fall off that cliff. I made the jump and Natasha jumped in after me. She put her wire latch connected to my belt. To prevent her from falling I grab her wrist. She begged me to let her go. And I pleaded with her to let me sacrifice myself instead of her. She twisted my grip off and left me hanging in safety."
"Your mother did not die in vain, little Cap." Tony assured. "Your mother died for a cause. In her death, she helped save the world."
James nodded slowly. A silent tear slid down his pale face. Steve knelt down to his height. "I'll be home soon. Promise. Take care of Natalee. I love you, and so does your mother." James nodded and turned away making his way to the Tesla to go home and find out how he can feed his little sister. When he was out of earshot, he cried and cried. Why did mom have to die? Why did she have to leave me and Natalee. Mom, if you can hear me, come back.
