"I can't believe you're making me do this." I yell at him under my breath as I follow him through the school hallways, "Honestly, physics was never my best subject." When the Doctor filled in the open spot for a physics teacher, he somehow managed to get me in as his teaching assistant. I don't know why no one seemed to ask any questions, but really, I'm just glad I don't have Rose's job.He looks over his should at me, and I take in the glasses I love that he wears, he has a large smile on his face as he says, "Just be glad you're not with Rose."
A small giggle slips through my lips as I think what she's probably doing right now, "You're right, no complaining."
We walk up to a closed classroom door and nod to each other before he throws open the door and we walk in with our heads held high- children can smell fear. The Doctor stands behind the front desk, throwing down his empty brief case, and I stand off to the side of him as he starts talking, "Good morning class. Are we sitting comfortably?" He grins proudly before offering me a seat behind his desk and turning to the white board.
"So... physics." He pauses as he writes it on the whiteboard, than turns back to face the class. "Physics, eh? Ph-y-y-sics, phyyyyysics, physics! Physics. Physics. Physics. Physics. Physics. Physics. Physics. Physics!" He looks over at the blank looks from the class and says, "I hope one of you is getting all this down."
"Physics to the twelfth power- got it." I say, looking down at my hand like I used it to count how many times he repeated the word, and make a 'check mark' sign in the air. He sends me a playful glare when some of the kids chuckle at me.
"Is that really what you heard?" he whispers as he leans down to me. I look up at him, slightly confused and just nod, "Weird, I may have just given a very quick, very detailed explanation of the basics of physics in Gallifreyan. And all you heard was me repeating 'physics?'" he closes my slacked jaw with a gentle hand as he grins, before leaning away from me and facing the room again.
He did what?! Why?! ... How?
"Okay! Let's see what you know. Two identical strips of nylon are charged with static electricity and are hung from a string so they can swing freely. What would happen if they were brought near each other?" He asks the class, and a young boy near the front of the room raises his hand immediately, "Yes, uh, what's your name?"
"Milo."
"Milo! Off you go." He smiles encouragingly.
"They'd repel each other because they have the same charge."
"Correctomundo!" He praises before wincing as he hears my quiet chuckles, "A word I have never used before, and hopefully will never use again." He looks back at me as I try to cover up my snickers, but I mouth to him 'I'll make a note of it' and he chuckles at me.
"Question two- I coil up a thin piece of nichrome wire and place it in a glass of water. Then I turn on the electricity and measure to see if the water temperature is affected. My question is this- how do I measure the electrical power going into the coil?"
The same boy- Milo- shoots his hand up, but the Doctor looks around the room, "Anyone else? Nope. Okay, Milo, go for it."
"Measure the current and P.D. using an ammeter and a voltmere." He answers without any hesitation, shocking not only me, but the Doctor as well.
"Two to Milo." I say stunned, and the Doctor nods in agreement before he continues to test him, "Right then Milo, tell me this- true or false- the greater the dampening on a system, the quicker it loses energy to its surroundings." He asks at top speed, and keeps the questions coming just as fast.
