A/N: Thank you all for all the votes, comments, and saves! It really means a lot to me that someone else is invested in this story like I am and I could never thank you enough for reading. I'm so sorry it's taken me this long to update and I really have no excuse other than I'm a mom and life happens 🤷🏻♀️. I hope this sweet chapter makes up for it, and just know the next chapter is going to be purely smut. enjoy!
───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ────────── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────I couldn't breathe.
I could feel a cold sweat running down my spine and couldn't help the shiver that followed. I was supposed to be getting dressed, but I was currently pacing, trying to keep myself from hyperventilating. I was fine, I had been all morning...until Anthe stopped by to drop off my kimono and lingerie. It was absolutely stunning and I didn't feel worthy of wearing it and the lingerie was out of this world. It was delicate and lacy and everything I had pictured and more. She really outdid herself.
She only stayed long enough to drop off the clothes and wish me luck, kissing me on the cheek as she left. I couldn't help but stare at the beautiful blue and white silk with all of its hints and accents. I ran my fingers over the soft material and thought about the amount of work that went into making it and how it really was a labor of love.
The more I looked at it, the more I couldn't help the overbearing thought of not being good enough. I didn't deserve this beautiful kimono, the beautiful lingerie, the gorgeous ceremony space that was being set up around me, or the beautiful man that was at the core of it all. I was just a normal girl and all these amazing things were happening around me and I had the biggest case of imposter syndrome. I felt like I was starting to spiral out of control.
"Y/N?" I heard Mai call out softly to me and step into the tent I was in "getting ready". I wanted to look up at her, I really did, but I couldn't lift my head at all.
"Oh! Are you okay? What's wrong?" She quickly made her way over to me and started rubbing my back, trying to help me breathe.
I couldn't articulate to her all the inadequacies I felt at the moment, so I just shook my head and sat on my cot. I put my head in my hands. I clenched my eyes shut and tried to shake all of the negative thoughts out of my head. Mai sat next to me and continued to try and calm me down.
"Being nervous before your wedding is completely normal, ya know. You've been so calm and put together this whole time I was beginning to think there was something wrong with you." She chuckled and the sound made me smile slightly. "I would be more concerned if you weren't freaking out right now. "
Well, at least I wasn't completely off my rocker here. I could feel my heart rate starting to even out and my chest didn't feel quite as tight anymore. I looked up at Mai and she was smiling brightly at me and I couldn't help but lean over, crushing her into a hug.
"Thank you, Mai. I can't say that to you enough, really." I let go of her and stood up to go splash some water on my face.
"You don't have to thank me. We're like a family and that's what family is for. I'm so grateful that you're the one who's going to be taking over Adaman duty, he's a handful." I couldn't help but laugh at that and I was glad to have this distraction but the thought of Adaman brought the feelings back quickly. My face fell.
"I can't help but feel like I'm not exactly qualified for what I signed up for here..." I looked down and suddenly the skin around my fingernails was the most interesting thing in the world.
"HAH! You're the most qualified one around! You two were made for each other and you know it. I know the title may seem scary, but I promise you have an entire clan behind you to help you along the way. We're all rooting for you." She stood and walked over to me, grabbing my hands and placing a small box into them. "Here. This is from Adaman. He gave it to me to give to you since he can't see you before the ceremony."
