Two blue eyes stared back at me in a quick jolt, and the being sprung backwards, hitting her back against the gold bars of the cage she was in. I was pretty startled by the movement myself, and jumped back quickly. For the next minute afterwards, we were both stuck in an intense, staring competition, not one daring to blink.

Finally, though, she spoke, in a voice so heavenly that it made me cold on the inside.

   "You're a child."

It was a statement. And an obvious one at that.

"Well duh." I groaned, seizing the moment to blink out the tears that started to form in my stinging eyes. "Are you really an angel?"

"Well duh." The voice spoke again, a little chuckle escaping her perfectly shaped lips as they pulled upwards in a warm smile.

"Who put you in here?" I asked, taking a step forward. She just looked at me, her eyes saddened, and shook her head.

"Can't say?" I asked, crossing my arms. "It was the school, wasn't it?"

   "How did you-"

"It's obvious. An angel's power can easily be used as magical energy if you've got the tools." I explained, as if she didn't already know all that. "And that energy is what those old geezers are using to power the school."

"You catch on pretty quickly." She nodded, grinning. "How come you know all this?"

   "Goddamn books."

   "Ah."

"Why can't you just bust out of here?" I asked quickly, my curiosity only growing by the passing second. "Is the cage like, stopping you from using your powers or something?"

I jumped over as I spoke, and grabbed the doors to the cage and gave it a tug. It was only when I touched the bars, did I notice her jumping up with her hands outstretched in front of her, as if she was telling me to stop. Immediately after the first tug, I felt a wave of pain course through my body, my entire form burning as if it was on fire.

I fell to the ground on my knees, my hands digging into the cold snow. The burning went away seconds after I broke contact with the door, but I felt numb and my ears were still ringing. I looked up, panting, and saw that the angel looked like she was in the same state I was.

"The hell was that?!" I panted, sitting back up.

"The reason why I can't just bust out of here." She answered, a little cough escaping her.
