Chapter 7

Just as I was about to go into the bathroom, the door rang.

My mother was already in bed at this point, so she couldn't answer the door.

I walked down the stairs and opened the door, to be greeted by a girl. She looked to be my age, with long, blonde, curly hair and green eyes.

"Hi! My name is Lydia. Lydia Smith. My family and I live next door. I was told to bring these to you and your family."

She held out a platter full of chocolate chip cookies. I took the platter from her hands.

"Oh, thank you. It's very kind of you and your family to give these to us." I told her, putting my mask back on, trying to hide my emotionless self. I twisted my mouth into a grin, trying to replicate the smiles I've seen others give to their families and friends.

"You are very welcome. What's your name again?" She asked.

"Mara. Mara Jones and my mother's name is Charlotte, but she's sleeping right now." I replied.

"Well, It was very nice to meet you, and I look forward to meeting your mother. I'll see you some other time." She skipped off back to her house.

"Have a good night!" I shouted back from my porch.

She is going to be a very difficult one to keep track of. I could already tell.
