Time flew by again. It hit Saithe that they were almost to final exams and the end of the school year at the last minute. She couldn't remember what she had done in that time between the night with Rye up to now. Though it wasn't the first time this situation occurred, and certainly not the last.
Saithe had just arrived at school and made it into the cafeteria when she saw everybody whispering to each other. She wasn't curious until she passed a group of girls and overheard, "Yeah he might become the new valedictorian!" Saithe faltered but immediately rushed towards Jupiter.
"What is everyone talking about?" She asked. Jupiter turned from her group of friends with a big smile. "We got a new transfer student! He's super cute from what people are saying! And-" Saithe didn't care, "Ok but what about valedictorian?" Jupiter shrugged. "People say he could take your spot. He was valedictorian at his old school." This made Saithe's heart race. She couldn't let this one thing she had going for her be taken before senior year. The ringing of the bell stopped her mind, only temporarily as she walked to class.

First period was abuzz with gossip about the new kid. This only made Saithe's mood damper even more. She disliked this new student before even meeting him. The teacher walked in with a grin. The class quieted. "Good morning students. Today we have a new student." He waved his hand towards the door and a boy walked in on cue. What instantly caught Saithe's attention were his eyes. They were a vibrant green compared to his fluffy raven black hair. His style was somewhat of grunge, alike to Saithe. Meanwhile all the girls were drooling over him, she began to resent someone of her comparison. "Please take a seat anywhere that is free Mr. Fourn." The student nodded and his eyes searched the room. They stopped on Saithe. She felt her blood cool and she began to pray he didn't seat himself behind her. Despite her hopes, he made way behind her and she heard him settle down into the desk.

With ten minutes to spare before the bell, her history teacher allowed the class to conversate. Throughout the whole period, girls were staring at the boy. She would gladly trade seats. In the middle of finishing her homework, she was tapped on the back. Saithe slowly turned to face the new student. "I'm Derrick." He grinned and held out his hand. She glanced at his outstretched hand and slowly shook it. "Saithe," she replied. Derrick nodded. "I've heard." She raised her eyebrow in confusion and drew back her hand. "Oh, I just mean I overheard people talk about the valedictorian named Saithe. I figured you fit the profile." She tilted her head slightly. "By just my name?" He shrugged. "What can I say, I'm good at profiling people." Saithe was suspicious of this new student. "That makes you sound rather skeptical." This made him let out a laugh, causing people to quiet and look towards them in curiosity and jealousy. Derrick looked at Saithe with a twinkle in his eyes. "I must admit, you are an interesting subject." She didn't like being called a subject. With one last glance at him, she turned around and spoke, "Likewise, Derrick."

Other than her first period, Saithe hadn't encountered Derrick the rest of her morning. This was relief after their short conversation. Before Saithe could make it to her table at lunch, Jupiter ran up to her and grasped her arm. Saithe jumped and looked at her. "What has you more excited than usual?" Jupiter laughs in return. "Oh please! You surely must know!"
They both sat down and she saw that all of them looked at her once they did. She spoke quieter to avoid the others snooping, "I am lost?" She seemed to word it as more of a question. Jupiter didn't bother to keep their conversation between just the two of them because she loudly exclaimed, "You and Derrick of course!" Saithe nearly spit out her water and she got murderous eyes from the females. Clearing her throat she answered, "Look, there is no me and Derrick." Her friend merely shook her head. "Oh please Saithe. He's only spoken to you despite others efforts." This shocked her. Saithe looked around, and based on the tables envious looks she assumed it true. "Ok I don't know why, but I have no interest in the new student." She spoke loud enough for peeping tables to hear.
Jupiter was about to speak but she stopped and looked behind Saithe. She soon felt an awkwardness at her back and Saithe turned, finding herself looking at none other than Derrick. "And here I thought we had something going." He smirked. This didn't help Saithe's case at all, now she was a liar. She was about the turn around but he must have known because he grabbed her shoulder. "Can we talk?" It was fully her intent to refuse him but something within her told her to go. She glanced at a wide-eyed Jupiter and looked back at Derrick. "Fine."

They walked out of the cafeteria awkwardly as everyone watched. He began leading her outside. "You're not trying to seclude me to kill me right?" She asked, half joking. He chuckled in response. "I have no intention of getting my hands dirty today." His vague response led her to wonder why he selected that reply.
Derrick stopped them at one of the picnic tables. He sat down and patted the seat beside him. She sat across from him instead. He paid no reaction to that, as far as she saw. "So what was so important that you had to make people believe you're infatuated with me even more?" She asked, crossing her arms. He smiled, but it quickly faded. "I have something serious to discuss. It's not meant for other ears." He looked around. Saithe began to feel her nerves stir, feigning all sarcastic remarks. "What kind of serious?" He locked eyes with her. "I've been having dreams too."
