Chapter 1 •Maddie's POV• I watched as the family crossed the street. The two little girls held their parents hands. They skipped along the sidewalk happily. I reached out my dirty hand as they passed by. The mom dropped five dollars in my hand and continued walking. The smaller of the two girls looked back at me. I smiled weakly at her, as she turned back around. My stomach rumbled in hunger. I grasped my five dollars and my bag. I carried them with me to the store. People gave me odd looks as I went through the aisles of food. I was used to it. I'd been living like this for a month now. I grabbed the least expensive bread and a giant water bottle. I paid for them and then tucked them carefully in my bag. My first week had been terrible. When I did get money it was stolen. Stolen by some other homeless person. Now I knew to be careful. I also knew how to get the money. I hadn't gone back to the hospital and I hadn't seen my family since my mom left me. I remember crying out to her. But she had already left. Left me.
