One that Hurts the Most

You ride your horse beside Levi. Petra & Eren are in the wagon as they both needed medical attention while the bodies of your fallen comrades are in another wagon. Everybody was riding, faces sullen in grim & sadness. Eyes are swollen & empty as it's certain that you're all remembering the memories that were spent together.

You glanced at Captain Levi, who remained indifferent. The man was really difficult to read. But deep down, you are certain that he is also mourning the loss of most of his squad, guilty that he wasn't there & much more determined to win the battle against the Titans.

The number of people he had already lost. A feeling that nobody can ever get used to, but something that is tied to this job.

Constant loss of a comrade is part of it because you all vowed to give your lives, your hearts when the situation calls for it - for Humanity's Sake.

You heard booming steps behind as you whipped your head quickly & saw a 10-meter titan chasing after your troops.

You & Captain Levi were guarding the wagon that carries your dead comrades & with that weight, the horses cannot go faster anymore.

You saw Levi grit his teeth. You already knew what to do because the titan is gaining ground. And behind him are more titans pursuing you.

He gave orders against his will, but there is no other option.

"But Captain-" cried the scout, "We can't leave them behind!"

"We have no choice!" You shouted, your voice trembling as you looked back & saw the Titans gaining ground. It is now or never.

The 2 scouts obeyed with no other choice. With tears in their eyes, they tossed the bodies of your dead comrades off the wagon. You heard their bodies fall on the ground as the horses started to gain speed.

Just as they pushed the last body, the cover got loose & you both saw the lifeless eyes of Eld.

You bit your lip as you fought the tears & looked forward, thankful that the wagon gained full speed.

Your troops reached the safety of the gates & were greeted by the citizens with grim & sadness. Murmurs of pity & disappointment echoed as some family or friends were trying to look for their loved ones among you. Some were crying, some were relieved as they threw their arms around the necks of your living comrades.

One man approached Captain Levi & you recognized him immediately. Petra's father.

You unmounted your horse & placed your arms around the man who became a part of your life as Petra is one of your best friends. You led him to Petra's wagon & her father sighed in relief as she was alive, leg fucked up, but alive. You informed him what happened & he wrapped his arms around you in gratefulness for saving his only girl. You informed him that she will have some recovery time before she jumps back into action. You remembered Eld's lifeless eyes & you returned the older man's hug for comfort as the Rall family treated you & all of Levi's Squad as his children. At least, you'll be able to see life in her eyes, know that blood is running in her veins, & there's warmth in her hands.

Alive.

That's what matters all the time.

You ignored the people's whispers. They don't know what it is like. Sometimes you just want to throw them out of the walls for them to witness firsthand. Even tie them up & use them as baits for the titans to reach up as they dangle helplessly in the air. just for them to feel what it is like.

You assured Petra's father that you will take care of her. He was grateful & stepped back in line to let the Scouts pass the road.

You mounted your horse & rode with Levi.

"How is Petra's leg?"

"It is fucked up but it can be mended. We'll have to give her time to recover."

He nodded in silence.

"Well done for saving her."

"But I let Eren-"

"Nobody knows what will happen. If you did not swoop in, Petra would have died. All of my squad would have been wiped out except you. And we got Eren back. It doesn't matter. As long as we're alive. We just have to carry on, with their wills in our hearts."

'Longest sentence he has ever said,' you nodded softly & covered your head with your cloak, hiding your tears as you mourn for Oruo, Eld, and Gunther.

At least you still have Petra, Eren... & your Captain Levi.
