Sophie sat, staring outside the bay window of the cabin, a warm mug in her hand, her knees curled up against her chest, elbows resting on her knees with a blanket around her shoulders.
Outside was gloomy, dark like after heavy rainfall. Even the air was dense and held a slight haze to it. It had been that way for a while, ever since the Darkness came. It had been two years, and yet it lingered, growing stronger by the day...
In the background, plastic toys could be heard clunking into each other and along the floor. Sophie paid little mind, her thoughts distracted by memories of Heaven and the one she lost. Now, all she could do was wait...
Tiny feet padded across the floor, followed by a gentle tug at the blanket around her shoulders. Sophie turned her head toward the small form, his sandy blond locks disheveled, his green eyes teary. "Momma," despite being two, his speech was impeccable. "Cas bwoke my toy."
Sophie frowned looking up toward the other boy peeking timidly around the corner. She set down her mug and stood, bending at her knees to scooped the boy at her feet into her arms. She wiped away a tear that fell, "Now, now... I'm sure it was an accident."
She walked into the next room, looking down at the brunette boy, his eyes more hazel in color and filled with concern. Sophie noticed the red, plastic car on the ground, missing one of it's wheels. "Cas," she spoke softly, "Tell me what happened."
"Wes and I were just pwaying," the boy answered obediently.
"Yes, but did you get a little rough?"
Cas lowered his head, nodding slightly.
Sophie smiled wryly, sinking to the ground. She set Wes down, keeping her arm around his waist as she reached for the car and it's missing wheel. She inspected it closely, "It's not that bad, Wes. When Dad gets home, he can fix it right up."
"Dada is coming home?" Wes inquired.
Even Cas perked his head up. "Mm-hm," she reached over and slipped her finger under Cas's chin, "He'll fix the toy right up. Until then, be a little more careful with your brother's things, okay?"
"Yes, Momma." She kissed him, then pulled back to give Wes the same affection before standing to her feet.
Sophie only took a few steps out into the living room before she paused and turned back toward them, leaning against the wall frame to watch them play. They were two perfect, human little boys and it was all thanks to Castiel. The power in which he had cast over her in her dying moments was strong enough to change their make-up, cleanse them of their Nephilim DNA. Because she had been so close to death, and because they had sucked most of her own Grace for growth, she, too, had become human.
Wes had taken after Dean in many ways, while Cas took more after Sophie. Wes was more headstrong, but he was protective and wanted to help in as many ways as possible. Cas was more reserved, shy, but just as sweet and sensitive. She loved them in ways she never thought possible.
A grumbling sound was heard from outside, causing Sophie to look over her shoulder. She padded across the room toward the window to see the Impala pulling up to the cabin. She smiled, relief filling her instantly. While the boys were still preoccupied with their toys, Sophie quietly made her way to the door and unlocked it as footsteps approached. She pulled it open, Sam's hand hovering over the absence of a knob. He looked exhausted, worn thin, but that didn't stop him from giving a big smile. "Hey," he greeted.
"Hi," she beamed, reaching around his torso to hug him.
It was warm, comforting. Having been alone in the cabin for a few days, it was just the kind of friendly gesture she needed.
