June 18th
R I L E Y
I woke up one morning and opened my phone, only to see several text messages and even more missed calls from Jade. All of them were of her asking me to come over and she seemed a bit distressed.
I walked over to the calendar hanging on my wall and checked what day it was, and my eyes instantly widened when I saw June 18th circled in bright red marker.
"Oh shit."
I put on some comfortable clothes, grabbed my wallet, jacket, and car keys, before rushing out of my house.
Suddenly, my phone started ringing and I knew that it was Jade, so I quickly accepted the call and continued to drive down the street.
"It's about time you picked up!" She yelled, groaning a little towards the end of the sentence.
"I know. I know. I'm really sorry. I slept in today."
"Just get here quick. I need you."
"Alright, do you need anything else?" I asked, licking my lips as I found a parking spot by the grocery store.
"Just the usual."
"Okay, I'll be there soon. I love you."
"I love you too."
I heard one more groan and the sound of her sheets being pulled even higher, and then she was gone.
I locked my car, stuffed my phone in my pocket and proceeded to enter the grocery store, which was rather full at 9 AM on a Thursday.
By this time, I already had my route memorized for days like these.
"Aisle eight. Aisle eight. Aisle eight." I chanted to myself, swinging the red basket back and forth as I walked, briskly.
I finally found aisle eight and grabbed as many sweets as I could; from chocolate, to marshmallows, to gummy bears, and such.
Next on the list was hot chocolate, which I found rather quickly, as it was only in the aisle right next to the sweets.
I checked my mental shopping list and I only had one item left to get, before I go to her house. This part would usually put my dignity at risk, but I was doing it for Jade, and that's all I really cared about.
Aisle sixteen was full of women who shot me weird looks as I scanned the shelves. I simply just smiled at everyone who looked my way until I found what I was looking for.
Just as I was about to reach for what I intended to get, I felt someone tap me on the shoulder.
I turned my head to the side to see a rather short girl— who was probably around fifteen or sixteen years old— looking a bit embarrassed.
"Excuse me, but do you think you can reach those for me?" She asked, quietly, pointing at some packs on the top shelf. "I'm rather short as you can see and I can't reach them."
"Well, I'm quite tall as you can see." I said, mocking her, and she smiled.
I looked to where her finger was pointing and grabbed two, before handing them to her.
"Thank you so much." She said, and walked away, putting them into her basket.
I grabbed a couple of the brand that Jade told me to get and began walking to the counter to pay.
