Since you know the basics of writing and the big idea, let's talk about what comes after those two steps.

Outlining!

Outlining is when you outline your rough draft of your story!

What Is a Novel Outline?

A novel outline is a document that includes important planning information about your novel's structure, plot, characters, scenes, and more. It is the skeleton of your novel.

Sounds simple, right? Well, it's a little more complicated than that.

Now, don't worry. I have some templates for you when you start! Yay! When I was in Eighth Grade, my teacher gave me a portfolio of writing styles. What I will be sharing with you, is the Narrative and Graphic Organizer.

Narrative Writing

A well-written narrative should include the following elements:

Has an introduction that introduces a main character and the setting

The setting is the time and place the action takes place

The point of view of the story/ narrative is obvious (from one character only, seen through their eyes, or a narrator)

Clearly organizes the events in proper sequence

Uses precise language and vocabulary appropriate to the topic

Uses appropriate transition words and phrases that clarify the relationship between ideas

Uses dialogue between characters to help move the story along

Uses a tone that shows how the writer feels about the story/narrative

Theme of the story/narrative is evident by the end of the story

Follows the conventions of standard English
