ALEX
Have you ever given an important test or audition? Do you know that moment where you are just waiting for the results? Have you felt those butterflies, too?
Lena set up a meeting to share the grant status. And as I walk into the meeting room, I learn that my butterflies could compete for the Olympics with the somersaults they are doing in me. My heart seems to have had a nitrous boost.
As I walked into the meeting room, everyone but Lena were there. The room lacked the usual cacophony. It was dead silent. I should say something, something encouraging maybe. But I couldn't bring myself to, so I joined in the silence.
Heads rose as Lena walked in. There was a collective intake of breath. I scanned her face for any signs, but her face was unreadable. My heart feels like it stopped now.
"So, I have good news and bad news."
"The bad news is that I now know what Liz felt, having you read at 7 and getting no reply." Lena says with a slight smile on her face.
I look around the room, trying to read the expressions of my team members.
"I'm the godess of one suded love stories."
They all seem a little confused until someone whispered something that sounded like, "the bet." Suddenly, the room erupts in cheers, high fives, and hugs.
I'm still confused, wondering what bet they're talking about. My body automatically responded to the room by clapping my hands, but my brain, which was still catching up. Lena notices my confusion and turns to me.
"Oh, and the good news is that we got the grant!" Lena says, beaming with excitement.
My heart fills with joy as I jump up from my seat and give Lena a big hug. I'm so relieved and grateful that all our hard work has paid off. Lena stayed frozen. I realized what I'm doing and tried to step off it when she embraced me back.
"We did it, Alex," she said in a teary whisper.
I wish this hug had lasted forever. It felt like having the whole world in my arms. Nothing else mattered, just her pulled towards me and having her head on my shoulder. As we slowly pulled away from the hug, I caught a glimpse of Lena's smile. I almost pulled her for a kiss when there was a shout.
"PARTY TIME!"
