'Alex, pay attention!'
I lift my head up the conference table, surrounded by my team members. Sophie was up front, discussing the quarterly results with her usual enthusiastic flair. But my attention kept drifting to Lena, who was sitting across from me. I couldn't help but notice her smug expression as Sophie spoke, and I knew she was just waiting for an opportunity to one-up me.
"Great job, Sophie," Lena interrupted. "But imagine how much better those results could have been if Alextreme here hadn't dropped the ball on that last project."
I rolled my eyes. "Please, Lena. We all know you were the reason that the project went off the rails."
Sophie looked between us with a worried expression. "Come on guys, neither of you gets credit for a project being closed because the management changed their mind. These things happen. Let's focus on moving forward."
As Sophie continued to talk about the goals for the quarter, my mind began to wander back to the first time I had worked with Lena. It started with a bad first impression, and then things had just spiraled out of control.
