ALEX
Coffee, with its rich aroma and deep warmth, has a way of comforting the weary soul. It's a moment of respite, a brief pause in the chaos of life. And on days like this, when everything feels like it's crashing down, I find myself yearning for that familiar taste, that jolt of energy, that tiny dose of solace.
I'd quit coffee long ago. Cold turkey. I realized that it was turning into an addiction, controlling me instead of the other way around.
But today, it feels like I don't have control over anything anymore. As if the path that I've been walking on has just reached a dead end. Today feels like I deserve this coffee at the very least.
"Ew, are you going to make out with a cappuccino?"
I looked up to see Mark walking towards me, closestly followed by Sophie and Lena.
"What are you guys doing here?"
"You went for coffee? We came here to share some tea," responds Mark in an excited voice.
"It has just been thiry minutes since I left,"
"After sparking a wildfire," remarked Sophie.
"Can someone please tell me what's going on?"
"I quit," responded Lena.
Usually, my problem is that I speak without thinking. But this time, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't think of a response.
"I'm sorry, WHAT?"
"I. Quit."
"I - why? The whole reason I left is so that you get the promotion and then you leave the promotion?"
"Instead, you'd want me to work for the misogynistic piece of meat?"
"Fair enough."
"It was crazy," said Mark breathlessly. "Lena came and told us what you told her. But, no offense, we were a big skeptical if you made it all up because you were...um... spiteful about your promotion, so Lena went up to David."
Lena took over.
"David said the same nonsense to me, and then when I threatened to report, he said 'do you think they'll believe me, a senior with a clean state or two bickering dramatic kids with some sort of love-hate relationship?'. He was right. The HR didn't believe me. So," she sighed.
"So, it is Unemployement Time"
