HOW COULD YOU MISS A DEAD BODY?” Wednesday demanded, as her, Helia and Nick all walked through the front doors of the school after getting pretty much restless sleeps. Nick had found them once they had come running out of the woods, and Larissa had already had her turn in shouting at all of them for stealing one of the school shuttles to go to the train station.

That went especially for Helia as it turned out she did not actually know how to drive.

“‘Cause it wasn’t there,” Sheriff Galpin retorted. “No footprints, no blood, no sign of a struggle. Nothing, nada. My search party looked all night.”

“Do you not see these bruises around my neck?” Helia questioned, holding up her chin for him to take a look. He didn’t even bother to glance. “I didn’t choke myself, Sheriff.”

“I never said you did,” he sighed, beginning to regret his job choice.

“Look, your search party must have left their seeing-eye dogs at home,” Wednesday countered, all five of them making their way up the staircase towards Larissa’s office. “Helia and I saw that monster kill Rowan right in front of us.”

“You two get a good look at this monster thing?” Sheriff Galpin raised an eyebrow at the two girls.

“Well, it was kind of dark,” Helia shrugged, trying to think back. Mostly she remembered seeing a large creature with claws. “The fireworks had been cut out by then, so there was no way to actually see the thing properly.”
