Letting Go

Taking in a deep breath, he stilled himself, opening his mind to the moment...

Stars glimmering above his head, raven whisps of hair obstructing his view as the sun began slowly drifting out of view..

Closing his eyes it all came to life, the soft calls of crickets amongst the overgrown grasses, the croaks of nocturnal frogs awonen from their dreams and the ever calling chatter of bats in the sky.

It was beautiful, all of it.

And yet within the infinite moment it all seemed to reel back snapping him into reality as his hands brushed against the scrap of fabric in his hands.

As his eyes slowly fell into his lap, the boy could almost still hear the laughter in his ears, feel a hand brush across his cheek and take in the soft scent of flowering pine and metallic clean as soft lips whispered secrets into his ears.

But looking down at the tattered scrap of pink in his hands, it all seemed so Distant.

Inatiqite..

Unimportant..

Unrealistic..

Imagined....

As if for a moment, the boy hadn't been in a real life at all; as if he'd just been dreaming.

Returning his gaze up, the boy's eyes one again met with the stars, the lake stretching out infont of him as if to trap him within the true vastness of it's space.

Shuddering as a cool breeze brushed against his arm and whispered beneath the fabric in his hands, the boy was reminded why he was here, what he had to be done.

Sitting up from his place amongst the grass, the boy picked up a small stone from amongst the shoreline, rubbing it slowly within his palm before gently tying the little scrap around it.

Taking in a shuddering breath, the boy held the wrapped stone in his hands, the object seeming to only grow heavier and heavier in his palm.

Looking out into the lake of stars, he exhaled.

With shuffling steps that seemed only few and far between, the boy's sole finally met the edge of the water, the tiny movement sending rippling waves far out into the reaches beyond what the boy could see.

Taking in a gulp of air steps skidding the gravel beneath his feet, he threw.

The seconds seemed to drag as the tiny stone fluttered through the air, carrying with it the heaviest weight of it all.

His own.

But like all things in the world that are carried, it fell.

Hitting the water it fell, sinking further and further behind his sight, swallowed by both sea and stars.

Yet buried as the stone would be,
Resting amongst the moss and fish and stones,
The boy still felt them fall and fall,
The tears that really carried the weight of it all.
