I was busy drinking coffee and reading a book in the living room when I heard a knock at the front door. I put my book down, knowing it was my best friend Gavi coming over to go out with my roommate, Sara.
They had gotten closer over the last few months and recently began dating. Since Gavi doesn't drive, Pedri is the one that usually takes them places, unless they choose to stay at our apartment, in which case Pedri takes me somewhere so we don't have to listen.
Pedri and I weren't that close when I first became friends with Gavi, but since we're forced to spend so much of time together, I really got to know him better. I'd even say we're closer than Sara and I are at this point.
I love spending time with Pedri but today I just felt like staying at home. Since Gavi was taking Sara to this new restaurant, I have the whole apartment to myself.
I opened the door to the boys, who were standing there holding bags.
"Hey guys, come on in," I say, giving them each a hug."Is Sara still getting ready?" Gavi asks as he takes a bag from Pedri and sets them both on the couch.
"Yeah I think so. I'll go see if she's ready. What is all of that though?"
"Mm no wait don't say anything to her yet. We need to set up first." Gavi says gesturing to the bags.
"Set up what? I thought you guys were going out tonight."
"Sorry y/n, slight change of plans."
"He's gonna ask her to be his girlfriend tonight," Pedri whispers to me.
"Shut up, you're not," I say in disbelief.
"I am. I wanted it to be a little more special and romantic. So, do you mind distracting her for a few minutes so we can make this place look more romantic?" Gavi adds.
"Yeah of course, I'll try and stall as long as I can." I reply, still smiling like an idiot at the thought of them officially being a couple.
"And take this thing with you," Gavi says handing me my book before I leave the living room.
"It's called a book Gavi." Pedri adds, helping him get stuff out of the bags.
I grab my book and knock on Sara's door before opening it.
"Are they here already? I just need 5 minutes to do my hair." She says, frantically rummaging through her things.
"It's okay, take your time. Here, let me help you." I say picking up her curling iron and plugging it in.
She sits down in front of her vanity, applying her lipstick while I let the iron heat up. When she's done I start to brush through her hair, and curl it in sections.
We started talking while I was doing her hair, and before I knew it I was done. God I hope the boys are done. I spun her around in her chair and pretended to fix her eyeliner to buy more time. Just as I was finishing, there's a knock at the door.
"All done. Have fun sweetie." I say giving her a hug before she gets up to leave.
When she goes to open the door, Gavi is standing there, holding a massive bouquet of roses.
"Shall we?" He asks, as she links her arm in his.As she goes to step out of the room, she looks down to see rose petals all over the floor in front of her. There's a trail of petals leading all the way to the living room. I follow behind them, trying to see what they set up in this time.
As we walk in, I see my entire living room turned upside down in the most beautiful way possible. There's rose petals all over the floor, the couch is moved out of the way and there's a massive blanket on the floor. Candles are lit all over and the lights were off. There were little fairy lights draped around the curtain rails and behind the TV. It all looked so beautiful, I almost can't believe that Gavi did this.
I slip past them I go by pedri who's standing near the door, taking pictures of them before they notice. While Sara is gushing over everything, I take the time to talk to pedri.
"Was this you? I don't believe Gavi came up with this whole thing." I question as he puts his phone away.
"What can I say, I'm a true romantic. It's a shame it's not for me though."
I start laughing at his comment and he playfully pushes my arm.
"So I assume this all means that we're going somewhere," I look up at him waiting for a response.
"Of course. I'm thinking the beach. Unless you have any other ideas."
"No beach sounds good. Let me just get my things." I go to my room quickly and grab my bag and phone.
"Have fun you two." I say as I walk back out to towards Pedri and usher him towards the door.
"Let us know when it's safe to come back," he adds as we walk out.
Sara and Gavi are so engrossed in each other that neither reply nor acknowledge us.Pedri spent the drive telling me how he came up with the idea. He read it in some book a while ago, but never met anyone he could do all this for.
When we get to the beach we decide to get food from our usual stall and sit on the sand. This has become such a regular thing for us, that even the owner of the stall knows us now, and our orders.
I grab the towel that he keeps in the back of his car, for our beach days. I began shivering from the cool wind and I soon realized I left in such a rush that I forgot a jacket.
"Here take mine, I always keep an extra." He says, handing it to me.
"Thanks, I didn't know it was so cold today." I reply.
We get our food and go to our usual spot on the sand. The wind died down a bit, so it's easier for us to eat there now.
Hours had passed, and I didn't even notice. The sun was starting to go down and we decided to stay a bit longer. As the sunset grew to be more beautiful, silence fell upon us, the view was just breathtaking. I couldn't help myself and of course has to take a picture.
"It's so beautiful." I say as I take my last picture. I put my phone down and my eyes glance over him on their way back to looking at the sky.
"Yeah it is." He replies looking at me.
His eyes were sparkling in the light. The way that the last sun rays hit his face made him look even more beautiful than before. I couldn't take my eyes off him.
Our fingers brush each other's on the ground and something inside me came to life. I've spent days like this with him before, we've done this all before. Why does it all feel so different this time?
My hand starts trembling next to his, and I try to move it away quickly before he notices.
"No need to be nervous with me cariño."
"I'm not nervous, it's just really cold." I counter, an obvious lie. I try to look anywhere else but at him.
He places his hand on my jaw and his other on my waist, forcing me to look directly at him.
A shiver goes down my spine at the contact. With his eyes looking directly at mine I can't seem to focus. Everything around me disappears, all I see is him.
"I can keep you warm."
Before I know it, his lips are on mine, passionately kissing me. I lean into the kiss, reciprocating his movements.
I never saw him as anything else but my friend. He was attractive, anyone would agree. And I really grew to love him. But I never let myself feel anything more for him. Every second we spent alone, I was convinced he saw me as just a friend too.
I eventually pull away to get some air and try and understand what just happened. He rests his forehead against mine as he slowly strokes my back.
"I've been wanting to do that for too long, amor." He finally whispers, breaking the silence.
"I didn't know you felt this way about me." I reply
"How could I not?"
"I guess we were inevitable." I reply, kissing him one more time.
We spent more time on the beach, talking for hours until it was completely dark out.
