Mariai's POV
I woke up to another day in hell and silence. Ever since my mother's death, my father turned from caring and loving to someone who is too terrifying to speak to without getting yelled at. I stopped talking completely. It's been four years since I last spoke.
My siblings and I try our best to not get father angry. When we don't succeed, it results in another bruise on us, or a bottle thrown across the room. I get up from my bed and head to my closet. I then get dressed and ready for breakfast.
(this is what she is wearing)
I walk downstairs, begging for my father to be passed out on the couch so my siblings and I don't have to be scared at the breakfast table. Fortunately, he was passed out with a bottle in his hand. You would think jumping for joy, but I didn't. Even though he was out, he would wake up soon enough. For four years, I've been an emotionless statue of a former child who used to be full of happiness. That child now is just.... nothing. Only a drowning vessel at sea just accepting fate.
But as I made my way to the dining room, I heard a mumble come from father. Frozen with fear plastered on my face, I begged and pleaded that he wouldn't wake up. he mumbled again and went back to sleep. I breathed a sigh of relief.
At the dining room
I sat down at my seat staring at my breakfast consisting of a bowl of congee, fried eggs and a piece of bacon on top, and a glass of milk. I ate my breakfast very slowly. My older siblings already finished theirs and were listening carefully at the door. If they heard Father coming, they would say the code words which were "the Devil is coming". Luckly no code words.... for now.
If Father did come, we made rules:
1. Don't speak unless spoken to
2. Be polite
3. The moment we can leave walk in a straight line and don't make a sound
After breakfast
We all walk out of the dining room quick and quietly, so father doesn't wake up from his drunken state. As I was walking to my room to study, I was stopped by a hand on my shoulder. I froze as I turned around to face my father who was now awake. I stood there staring at him with pure fear plastered on my face.
He didn't say anything. But as he walked away with an angry face, he whispered "Mistake" under his breath and purposely slapped my head making me fall to the ground. He hit my side with his foot and proceeded with his walk. I was too numb to react. I just walked to my room mindless of what just happened. It was normal for us especially me.
I reached my room, shut the door, and began studying my scrolls. A few hours later, I look at the time: it reads 11:40 am (yes, she knows how to read a clock LOL). I decided to take a break for a few minutes before I had to go downstairs for lunch. I put away my scrolls and lay down on my bed.
Tears start to fall from my eyes as I lay there still. My eyes expressing sadness, but my face stays numb.
