It took a few days for Sideswipe and Jetfire to crack Starscream's codes, and you took that few days actually getting to know Starscream, vice versa.
You noticed how whenever the other kids tried to talk to him, he ignored them or walked away. But with you, he stayed and actually engaged in conversation. He liked to talk to you. Which certainly puzzled the other kids. But you both had a mutual understanding of the other, so it didn't bother him or you.
One day, you were talking to Starscream outside the base, as he was practicing his blade on rocks. You sat on a boulder he had just cut in half for you to sit on.
"So where'd you learn sword combat?"
He sliced through the rocks swift and heavy, grunting. "All transformers, at least Decepticons from what I know, usually only learn how to use standard arms. But seekers, like myself, had a different option."
You sat on your stomach, holding your head up with your hands below your cheeks. "You know, I always thought it was so cool how your wing turns into a sword. Can both of your wings turn into a sword?"
He stopped slashing for a second to digest the complement. Your kindness he was only just starting to get used to, though he didn't think he ever would.
He answered your question, swinging the sword in the air, making a whooshing sound. "Uh, no, only one wing can turn into a sword. It depends on the individual seeker which wing is the balde." He placed the tip of his sword in his other servo, looking to you. "I went through extensive training on how to use a sword correctly. I do use my armory, like my laser cannons, but I prefer more personal sweeping attacks."
"You like to be on the offensive." You observed.
Starscream readied his sword to cut another rock. "And you don't."
As he sliced through the rock, you realized something. You quickly sat up.
"Hey, maybe we can teach other."
He pointed his sword down, and walked over to you. "What do you mean? I'm 10 times the size of you."
You dangled your legs over the edge of the sliced boulder. "I mean, I'm very good at defense and your very good at offense. Maybe we could train together, and learn more about what we lack in. Besides, your sword can't cut through my katanas."
Starscream was hesitant. "I don't know (N). It seems a little dangerous for you."
You stood and pleaded with him. "Come on Starscream, as long as we know what we're doing we should be fine. I know you'll be gentle."
That comment flustered him, and he turned away. He was silent for a long moment. Eventually he gave in.
"Get your swords. I want to see what else you can do."
You beamed, jumping down from the rock. "Thank you so much! You won't regret it."
Nether of you did. It really did help the both of you out, and it strengthened your bond. You both found a way to fight each other in a comfortable style, and new things were learned.
The raid on the Decepticon base didn't go as successfully as the Autobots wanted it to, but Starscream was able to help free a lot of mini cons from the slave labor before the ally force retreated back to their base.
It also seemed Hotshot and Starscream were actually getting along now. He came back instead of "finishing Megatron off" because...

"Time is running out for you to make your decision Starscream. Choose, will it be your spark, or your programing? Autobot, or Decepticon?"
He was frustrated. He wanted to finish Megatron off right then and there. But as he watched the Autobots retreat to the warp gate, his spark spoke to him.
