Chapter 4

Practice Makes Perfect?

Tuesday

The previous night had ended with little fuss after Y/n's short argument with her mom. She had taken a little trip with Marshmallow, going outside to get cat food with her in the afternoon. The rest of the evening was spent in her apartment, catching up with a cute kitty in one of their infamous one sided conversations. It was a very peaceful end to the day, curled up together on Y/n's bed as they both fell asleep soundly.

The problem begins now, as Y/n gets ready for school and tries desperately to convince Marshmallow to stay home and not trail her to Shujin.

"Marshmallow, I cannot bring a cat with me to school. I'd get in serious trouble, okay?" Y/n told the albino cat, as if she could understand her words. The feline stood proudly on the coffee table with her head held high, giving her human a blank stare. Y/n stood by the door of the apartment, slipping her shoes on.

The second Y/n's hand rose to the door knob Marshmallow's violent cacophony of meows began again. She jumped off the coffee table and sprinted to the door, hoping to escape as soon as it was opened. Y/n stopped in her tracks, and with a low groan she pushed the cat away gently with her heel.

"Marshmallow! Come on- I'll get you treats, okay? I'll even get you a toy! I just can't bring you with me," She squatted down, petting the cat's soft white fur. Marshmallow didn't seem swayed at the promise of entertainment and food, batting away Y/n's hand before letting out a low yowl. Y/n crossed her arms, staring down at the defiant cat. "Don't give me attitude. Unless you want mom to get mad at me for bringing you to school."

Marshmallow always seemed as if she knew exactly what Y/n was saying, because in that exact moment she stopped meowing in protest and lowered her head slightly. As if understanding the weight behind the words Y/n had said to her, and came to the realization that she didn't want to be the reason Y/n got in trouble. Y/n immediately felt guilty at the cat's innocent display of shame, leaning in to kiss Marshmallow's forehead. "I didn't mean to make you sad.. I won't be out long, okay? I'll still get you treats."

Mallow leaned into Y/n's face gently, giving her a soft head butt as she meowed in response. Y/n smiled, standing up and dusting the cat hair off of her blazer before walking out of her apartment.

Haru had promised to meet Y/n at the train station in Shibuya, but it seems her train might have been running a bit off schedule. It was clear to see the impact that the minor delay had on the station. From the second Y/n deboarded her train, she has been drowning in a sea of people.

She tried to detach from the crowd, her stomach turning nervously the longer she stayed in it. She stood in front of a tourist map stand that was pushed flat against a wall. That was the spot her and Haru had agreed to meet after all. But even standing off to the side felt claustrophobic.

Now it just felt like she was backed into a corner, the crowds in front of her blocking any way of escape. She curled in on herself, trying not to let her uncomfortableness show.
