Chapter 5

So.. the cat talks. And might not be a cat?!?

Tuesday April 5th - 7:30 p.m

Y/n looked down at Marshmallow, her eyes wide as she felt her knees buckle. She slid onto the floor, back to the front door. The cat stared at her with an equally shocked gaze.

"You can understand me?!"

There was no doubt in Y/n's mind. Her cat's lips were moving, noise was coming out, but it was not the usual cute 'meows' Y/n was used to. It was a light airy voice, soft and angelic. She was speaking. She was talking in human. fucking. language.

"My head hurts."

Y/n barely had the chance to think before the words slipped out. She couldn't form a cohesive response if she even tried. She felt completely and utterly exhausted. This day has dragged on for forever. From class, to volleyball practice, to whatever the fuck happened when she was on the train- her mind couldn't keep up with it. She thought maybe, just maybe she would be able to come home, relax, cuddle up with her sweet little companion, and feel somewhat normal amongst the crumbling world around her.

But no. Of course not. Her cat had to go and welcome her home with actual human words. If there's a god out there, she was sure they were absolutely amused by her pathetic day.

Marshmallow placed a supportive paw on her human's knee, patting gently. "Y/n, are you okay?! How can you understand me?"

So many questions were racing through Y/n's mind, but not a single one dared to come out. Maybe she didn't want to know. Maybe she could just pretend everything was normal. Maybe she actually is going crazy, and after a good nights rest she can wake up and it would be none of this ever happened.

But the kitty in front of her was so persistent on making sure she was okay. Light taps, gentle head nudges. Y/n looked back down to meet her vermillion eyes, unsure of what to say. "I'm.. fine," She managed to awkwardly squeak out.

Marshmallow pouted. "Please don't lie, Y/n."

Of course. The cat she's told all of her secrets to, the cat she's cried to, the cat who has witnessed all of her most embarrassing moments. Of course that's the cat who can talk. Now her emotional support cat can actually challenge her when she tries to delude herself from the truth. "I don't know what the fuck is going on," She whispers.

Marshmallow sits by her side, and on instinct Y/n raises a hand to comb through her fur. The soft, fine hair does wonders to calm her nerves and ground her in reality. Marshmallow leans into her touch. "Did something happen today, Y/n?" Her cat asked again, looking her dead in the eye. Y/n's gaze dropped to the floor, unable to hold the weight of her intense stare.

"A lot," She muttered in reply, still trying to comprehend the fact that her fucking cat was asking her if she was okay. It felt like her brain was lagging farther behind the more the cat spoke. Marshmallow seemed to understand that she needed time to process it, and just as she always has throughout Y/n's life, she offered her silent support as Y/n gathered her wits.

Y/n took a few shallow breaths. "A fucking lot happened today," She could hear her voice waver, and the back of her throat stung in that painful, tense way. A tell-tale sign of the waterworks she was holding back. "School was horrible. I-I mean, it was fine for the first part. But god- I fucking hate my gym coach. And practice was grueling, we didn't get any breaks the entire time. We didn't even get to drink water.
