Hunter pulled up in front of the diner and turned his car off. This was pretty much a tradition for their group to meet up here for breakfast. He took his seatbelt off and got out the car before locking it and walking inside.

He spotted Laine and Trevor sitting at one of the booths at the back and walked over to them. "Sorry, I'm late." He said with a smile.

"It's okay. I got here earlier anyway." Laine waved him off before looking back down at her cup of coffee. It was still awkward between them.

He cleared his throat and looked away from her. "Debbie's not here yet?"

"Uh, nope. Not yet." Laine said. Of course he was thinking about Debbie. He always thought about Debbie. She wasn't sure why they even broke up in the first place when they both clearly still had feelings for each other.

"So, what were you talking about?"

"I was actually about to show Laine this." He pulled out a piece of paper. "Check this out."

He laid it out on the table and she looked at it. "Oh, you have a map."

He had an excited smile on his face as he pointed to it. "Yep. This is the place I was telling you about. It's up the coast, away from everyone. We can make camp right about here. Hike down to the beach anytime we want."

Hunter raised his eyebrows. "We? You going together?"

Laine looked up at him. "It's the first time I'm hearing it as we."

"I just thought that it would be fun, you know?"

She went silent for a moment, surprised at the comment. "But I thought this was your big camping trip with the guys."

Trevor's face went red and he looked down. Hunter raised his eyebrows. He had figured out a while ago that Trevor had a crush on Laine but it seemed she wasn't interested in him back and only saw him as a friend. She had her eyes on another guy, who had his eyes on another girl.

It really was a complicated situation.

Hunter really didn't think Trevor stood a chance though. Laine had never shown one ounce on interest in him.

"Well, I'd miss you too much." Trevor flirted with her.

Hunter watched in amusement as Laine didn't pick up on the flirting at all. She just rolled her eyes teasingly. "Okay, so you're surfing all day. What do I do?"

"I'm gonna teach you. By the end of the week, you'll be one with the waves. It's gonna be awesome."

She leaned away from him with a shake of her head. "Oh, my God, no."

"I promise. Come on. You can forget about the world for a while, leave it all behind." Leave your thoughts of Hunter behind, he added in his head. He wanted this time for them to connect and for him to show her he was the better option. Hunter may be his friend but when it came to Laine, he wasn't going down without a fight.
