Falling for your best friend, Peter, was the biggest mistake you had ever made.
Because he didn't like you back.
He had a crush on MJ.
Then they got together.
You had no grudge against MJ whatsoever. The girl was actually very fun if you got to know her. But you liked Peter, and he liked her. First Liz, and now MJ.
Am I really invisible to him?
You had been there for Peter since almost the very beginning of your lives. You had always been a bit boyish and chaotic growing up, and were a very active child. You had loved making new friends, and so the six year old you jumped at the opportunity of befriending the quiet, shy kid who lived next door to your apartment where you had recently moved to with your mother.
You had helped heal him after his parent's deaths. He opened up to you, and you opened up to him. You were the first person to find out about him being Spider-Man.
No, you weren't saying that Peter should date you because of all you'd been through together. You weren't saying this at all. Heck, you hadn't even started complaining until a few weeks ago. And even then, you weren't voicing your thoughts at all.
3 weeks ago, Peter failed to show up at your monthly movie night. He was scarcely available for hanging out together anymore due to his duties as an Avenger, but the two of you always decided upon a day every month to binge on your favorite movies together.
Both of you had already selected the day. The movie night was to be held at your place, and you had made all the arrangements.
But Peter was a no-show.
At first, you panicked. Peter not bothering to attend events, especially events like this, was unusual. Your mind wandered to the worst possibility: That Peter was wounded badly, or worse-
You blew his phone up with calls, but all went to voicemail. The messages you sent were received, but not read. You panicked even more. Then you called May.
He was with MJ.
On a date with MJ.
You shrugged it off like it didn't bother you, pretended that you hadn't worried yourself to death, and tried to sleep.
You didn't get much sleep that night. Your best friend, the unsocial, shy, sweet boy you knew growing up, the boy you defended during random playground brawls, your go-to person for everything, every single situation, was growing more and more distanced with you by the day.
It hurt like hell.
That was just the first time, though. Peter apologized for forgetting movie night with a text:
I'm so sorry, forgot about the movie night. Promise u it won't happen next time.
But it did happen next time. Sort of. You both rescheduled and held the movie night a couple days later.
He cancelled last moment, saying that MJ had brought tickets to an art exhibition, that she didn't know about the get together, but that could we maybe reschedule again?
You had just smiled and said, "Yeah, no problem dude."
Ned was the only one who knew, along with May. They were the sweetest, and were very sympathetic, but sympathy was not what you needed right now.
You needed your best friend.
Your best friend didn't need you, though.
As time went on, your's and Peter's bond gradually declined. And no, it wasn't because of a massive confrontation, it was because MJ didn't appreciate you and Peter being "practically joined at the hip", and it was because every time you saw the boy with the brown, chocolaty eyes and with the naturally unruly brown curls slicked to the side and freckles decorating his adorable face, you fell a little more for him.
Every time you heard his voice, you wanted him more.
Every time he ignored your messages, or cancelled on you, it hurt more.
The pain wasn't going away.
He was still sweet, still the unsocial, shy boy you knew from your childhood, but he wasn't your best friend anymore.
And saying it hurt like hell would be an understatement.
