A month later...

"I hate to say it but Rock and Punk Rock music is what got me through those years. After every single beating, punch and kick." Kalea explained, she smiled slightly, watching as the snow fell.

Her case against him was a fast and quick one, everything had been caught on camera and she'd been collecting evidence since she was smart enough to do so. Reverend Kingston had been charged with assault, battery, child abuse and more. He wasn't getting out for the next 5+ years and that was all she needed.

Kalea didn't know how to feel. A part of her felt relieved, the biggest source of pain in her life was gone just like that. Of course she still had the scars and the memories but physically, he was away from her. However, her only parent had left too. The man who raised her, fed and carried her on his back.

"Prolly because you needed to release your anger." Sky shrugged, watching as her partner stared out the snow, she pulled her own scarf off and wrapped it around Kalea. She kneeled down in front of her and stared at her to make sure that it was on right before she patted her thighs.

"You look at me like I might break at any second." Kalea stated, she was staring at Sky as she said so, then her eyes trailed away from her and back to the snow that was falling onto the already coated ground.

Sky couldn't argue back because through this whole month, she had in fact been worried that Kalea would break. Instead, she hadn't broken once and that worried her even more. Her eyes followed Kalea's every movement, obeyed her every wish and command.

"Why haven't you?" Sky spoke lowly, feeling as Kalea's eyes turned back to her.

"I've been carrying this on my back for years. I've lived in fear for years." Kalea explained, "You remember how I was when we first met. Just a shell filled with anxiety."

Sky nodded, Kalea had definitely grown in the past few months. She'd become a much more flexible, open-minded and happier person in general.

"I'm happy, Sky." Kalea sighed with a small smile, "I made him hit me. I provoked him on purpose and made you call the police. I needed a way to him out of my life for good."

Sky stared at her with widened eyes, she'd never known that Kalea had done everything on purpose. It made sense why when she'd woken up, she had no sadness or anger, instead she was glad everything had been taken into evidence.

"Even if it meant that you got beat to the point where you had to be hospitalised for a whole month? You have scars that aren't ever gonna fade from your body or mind." Sky argued her point, she hated the part of Kalea's plan where she allowed herself to be hurt.

"Be happy that I'm free. Not that I used to be locked up." Kalea reached over and Sky's cheek before slowly leaning down and pecking her lips. She quickly sat up because she was still in a lot of pain.

"I am happy that you're free." She sighed, standing up and sitting besides Kalea on the hospital bench, they both sat in silence for a while.

"He hated me because my mother passed away during childbirth." Kalea suddenly said, "She died not because of me but because he'd still beat her while pregnant and by the time she reached her due date, she was weak and frail."

Sky simply listened, she snaked her arm around Kalea's back and pulled her closer. She didn't respond and allowed her to vent, she'd probably never told anyone this.

"He'd beat me everyday. Force me to pray, fast and learn the Bible. I'd clean day in and day out." Kalea continued, her voice becoming shaky as she spoke, "He hated me. Not once did he ever look at me with love."

"The worst part is that he made resent God and my faith." She sighed shakily, her breath was white as it faded away because of the cold temperatures, "That man never loved God, he only loved the praise and footstool that preaching the word of God gave him."

"I appreciate you telling me this." Sky said softly, feeling as Kalea slowly rested her head on Sky's shoulder. "I'm sorry if had to be that way for you."

Skylar cut a slice of the carrot cake for Kalea before handing her the plate, she smacked Sky's hand away as she watched Kalea eat a mouthful of the cake. She groaned in happiness before she gulped down the rest of the slice before she asked for seconds.

"Damn, she's already getting seconds and I ain't even get a slice?" Sky asked with raised brows as Skylar handed Kalea another plate.

"You wasn't in the damn hospital. You had your own cake when you decided to be all Houdini on the bike." Skylar rolled her eyes, making Kalea chuckle while she had a mouthful of cake and Sky kissed her teeth.

"Your cakes are ass anyway." Sky mumbled before she reached for the remote and shuffled through Netflix, looking for a Tyler Perry movie to watch.

Kalea limped slightly as she walked to the couch and slumped down right next to Sky. Skylar quickly followed with two plates and handed one to Sky before sitting next to Kalea.

Resting her head on Sky's shoulder, Kalea felt herself doze off. She'd fallen into a deep slumber and by the time her eyes fluttered open, she was in a dark room with someone's arms wrapped around her like her cocoon. She could smell Sky's familiar, fruity conditioner and she sighed quietly before she relaxed back onto the bed.

She simply stared at the ceiling as she thought about everything that had happened. Her life was unravelling in a way she'd never expected and it was all happening so fast that she didn't know how to react, she didn't know how to feel. Kalea thought that by getting her father arrested, a weight would be lifted off her shoulders but the relief was only for a moment.

But how she could tell Sky that she felt the exact same? She couldn't break her lover's heart like that. So instead she'd lie, act like she was happy.

Maybe all I need is time. Kalea thought to herself, facing upwards in the dark room. Her heart still felt heavy but Sky made it all bearable.

She wasn't happy but then again, Kalea had never really known the feeling of happiness. Maybe it would take a while to set in.
